Lady Cobras continue undefeated against Grantham17 January 2008 — The Lady Cobras bumped up to 8-0 overall this week. The ladies also earned their third conference win of the season while extending their unbeaten record. Wednesday evening, the ladies earned 12 points in the first period alone, the same score their Grantham opponent would finish the game with. Though the ladies never managed another double-digit period, they did keep the points steadily coming. By the last buzzer, the Norwayne girls surmounted a 20-point lead over Grantham, winning 32-12. Courtnei Gilbert and Imari Howell tied for the lead score in that game, earning six points each. Jenna VanHorn, Ivy Hartzell, Kayla Williams and Connor Davis contributed four points apiece, and Taylor Tindal and Natana Martin each had two. A win over Eastern Wayne on Thursday was the Cobras’ third conference victory of the season. The Norwayne offense exploded again in the first period, as the girls earned 14 points while Eastern Wayne only had two. By halftime, the girls had built an 18-point lead. Throughout the second half, the Lady Cobras steadily added points to the board, finishing with a final score of 36-12. Howell was the lead scorer with an impressive 15 points. VanHorn, Davis, and Martin each had four, while Madison Mercer, Tyecha Newsome, Hartzell and Williams had two points apiece. The ladies took on Greenwood Monday night, winning what Coach Pam Andrews called “one of the best games of the season.” In a stellar offensive show, the ladies earned 17 points in each of the first two periods, while limiting Greenwood to eight for the half. Though the Cobras’ scoring slowed in the second half, they still played a spectacular game and finished with a 49-24 lead. Gilbert and Howell had 10 points each, whilee Brooke Bell had eight and Hartzell had 7. William and Davis each had four, and Reagan Herndon and Newsome each contributed two. Alaina Moore had one point. The high point for the Norwayne boys this week was earning their first win of the season against Grantham in a nail-biter on Wednesday night. At the end of the first period, the Cobras were ahead by one point, and only extended that lead to two points by the half. Holding onto their advantage and stretching it a tad more, the boys went into the final period three points ahead. Though Grantham got some momentum behind them and outscored Norwayne 7-5 in the final period, the Cobras finished one point ahead, taking the win 33-32. Jordan Williams and AJ Mundle led offensively with eight points each. Kareem Alawar had seven points, while Eric Murchison had four. Adam Pate, Shakel Powell and Dylan Smith each had three. Norwayne’s winning touch didn’t last, however, and the boys fell to Eastern Wayne in a conference match the following night. Down 29-16 going into the second half, the boys couldn’t keep up offensively and lost 54-32. Mundle and Powell were the lead scorers, with seven points apiece, while Greg Williams contributed two. Alawar had four, Murchison had three, and Smith and Hunter Jones each had two. Monday night, the Cobras suffered a big loss to Greenwood, falling 47-20. Greenwood had amassed 21 points just by the end of the first period, while Norwayne only had four. Going into the final period, Greenwood boasted a 42-15 lead. While the Cobras couldn’t hope to catch up, they did hold Greenwood to five points while adding five to their own score. Alawar had the game’s high score with eight points. Hunter Britt and G. Williams had three points. Powell, Mundle, and Murchison contributed two apiece. The Cobras have a bye this week, and will host Greenwood on January 24.
