Morehead semifinalists17 January 2008 — Three Wayne County Public Schools’ students are semifinalists for one of the most prestigious college scholarships in the nation. Charles B. Aycock High senior, Emilee Quinn; Eastern Wayne High senior, Noelle Kelly; and Spring Creek High senior, Brian Heim are competing against 250 semifinalists in the Morehead-Cain Scholarship selection process. Scholarship recipients will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a full four-year scholarship. They will also participate in summer enrichment programs designed to develop leadership skills and will have the opportunity to travel abroad. As Morehead-Cain semifinalists, the three students traveled to Greenville on January 10, to be interviewed by a regional committee. Over the next few weeks, the regional committees will narrow the 250 semi-finalists to 60-70 finalists to compete at UNC Chapel Hill, March 1-4. While there, the Central Selection Committee will interview the Morehead-Cain finalists. Finalists will also have the opportunity to learn about the University and attend classes. Approximately 1,500 candidates from North Carolina began the selection process last fall. Students are also competing against candidates from across the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. Only 75-85 Morehead-Cain Scholarships will be awarded. “Advancing this far in the Morehead selection process is quite an honor and accomplishment,” states Dr. Steven Taylor, Wayne County Public Schools Superintendent. “We congratulate Ms. Quinn, Ms. Kelly, and Mr. Heim, and wish them well in their pursuit of this prestigious scholarship. We are proud to have them representing Wayne County Public Schools’ in this distinguished group of academic achievers.”
