Falcons take top honors at Beddingfield

17 January 2008 — The Falcon wrestlers earned top honors in another local tournament this weekend. The boys claimed firsts place in the sixth annual TDR Wilson Beddingfield Tournament on Saturday.

Overall, said Coach Mark Bass, the competition was well-balanced between the participating teams, and the Aycock boys performed to his expectations. He said he was especially proud of the balance he saw within his team’s performance.

“Anytime you are able to win a tournament it is a huge achievement,” said Coach Bass, “but when you are able to do so with basically everyone contributing it is very satisfying as a coach and for the team as a whole.”

Of the 13 wrestlers Aycock took to the tournament, 11 finished within the top six of their class, and six finished in the top three.

Drake Gurley (119) and Khiry Reid (285) were the top wrestlers of the day for Aycock, earning first place honors in their respective classes. Gurley won by decision, 4-2 over Bryan Bowen of J.F. Webb. Reid defeated Walker Holt of Hunt by decision, 11-5.

Kevin Carmel (135) and Jarrett Covar (215) earned silver. Carmel fell 5-3 to Pedram Rahmatabadi of Green Hope High in the final round, and Andrew Evans of Cardinal Gibbons defeated Covar 5-1 in the championship round.

Justin Farrell (112), Brandon Bailey (130), and Bryan Diorio (189) each placed third. Josh Grimes (160) and Freddie Coley (171) each earned fourth place. Joseph Conner (125) earned fifth in his division, and Nick Bently had sixth.

The Falcons will not have any dual matches this week due to semester exams, but will participate in the Firebird Duals at Southern Nash on Saturday.
