Falcons take conference opener17 January 2008 — In a game that remained close down to the last seconds, the Charles B. Aycock boys’ basketball team finished their conference opener with a one-point win against Beddingfield. Going into the game, the teams knew they were pretty evenly matched. Beddingfield finished out non-conference play with a record of 1-11, while Aycock had a 2-10 record. But in the first few minutes of Friday’s game, it was Beddingfield who kicked off the game in high gear. The Bruins’ burst out of the gate, while the Aycock offense was slow to start up. At the end of the first period, Beddingfield had a 15-8 lead over the Aycock boys. But as the first half came to a close, the Falcons had narrowed the Bruin’s lead to four points. Both teams played hard in the third period as Beddingfield extended their lead to six points. As the final period commenced, however, the Falcons were determined to battle it out for the win. Scoring 21 points to Beddingfield’s 14, the Aycock boys edged out their opponents for a 59-58 win. The Falcon offense spread their points between a majority of the players, and had six successful three-point shots. David Gurganus led the Falcons with 13 points, and had two three-pointers. Jordan Riley had 11 points and three three-point shots. Kendra Reid had 10 points, while Andre Bryant had nine, including one three-pointer. Kyle LaFlamme had five points, and Michael King had three. Isaac Ryals, Tyheim Pitt, Jonathan Williams, and Jordan Yawn each contributed two points. After opening conference play with a win and bumping their record to 3-10, the Falcons host Kinston on Friday night.
