Gaines hits 20 in games03 January 2008 – The week before Christmas saw back-to-back big nights for the Lady Falcons’s Chantel Gaines, who surpassed twenty points Thursday and Friday nights. But Gaines’s performance wasn’t enough to carry the Aycock girls’ basketball team, who fell to 1-10 before the break with losses against Clayton and Fike. On Thursday night, the Comets had doubled Aycock’s score by the end of the first period. Though the Falcons outscored Clayton in the next period, they were still down by five points at the half. Things went downhill for the ladies after that. In the second half of the game, the ladies earned only 11 points, while the Comets added 32 to the board, finishing with a 55-29 win over Aycock. Gaines had 21 points for the night, with the remaining eight earned by two players. Yolanda Pitt had five, while Courtney Sheeks had 3. Though the ladies got more on the board Friday night, it still wasn’t enough to catch the Golden Demons, who earned a 55-38 win. The setback for the Aycock girls on Friday came in the second period, when they slid behind by 14 points before the half. Though they earned those 14 points during the third period while holding the Demons to six, the ladies lost their grip on the game in the final period. Fike added 15 more points while Aycock only had four, for a final total o f 55-38 in favor of the Demons. Gaines had an impressive 24 points against Fike, while Aycock’s next highest scorer Brianna Reid had six. Sheeks had five, and Pitt had three. The ladies traveled to North Lenoir on Wednesday, and will host Southwest Edgecombe on Monday night.
