Boys' improvement not enough to take down Comets03 January 2008 – The Aycock boys’ basketball team showed improvement in their game against Clayton on December 21, playing a competitive game against the Comets and coming within single digits of a lead. However, the Falcons fell to Clayton that Thursday night, and followed up with a second loss Friday against Fike. The Falcons showed intensity Thursday night, finishing out the first period just two baskets shy of Clayton, and only seven points down at halftime. Outscoring the Comets 11-8 in the third period, it seemed that the Falcons stood a fighting chance of claiming the lead. But Clayton’s offense stepped up to the challenge, and the Comets earned a ten-point win over Aycock. The final score was 51-41. Jonathan Williams was the only Aycock player to reach double-digits, earning 14 points for the Falcons. Leonard Compton had nine points, while Isaac Ryals had six and Michael King had five. On Friday, the Falcons had the chance to rebound from their near win, but fell 66-40 to Fike. The boys started strong, and ended the first period down by only five points. But the Falcons went into halftime with a 12-point deficit, and fell even further behind in the third period, only scoring five points. Things were not looking pretty for Aycock as they entered the final period down 50-21. Though the boys’ intensity reappeared as they earned 19 more points before the buzzer sounded, their earlier mistakes couldn’t be overcome, and Fike earned the win. Williams was again the lead scorer, earning ten points, while Ryals had nine and Jordan Riley had eight. Devon Newsome and Andre Bryant each had three. Tyheim Pitt, Kendre Reid, and King each had two and Jordan Yawn added a final point. The Falcons traveled to North Lenior on Wednesday, and will host Southwest Edgecombe on Monday.
