Free tax prep benefits families

20 December 2007 — The Wilson County Department of Social Services has partnered with the IRS for its fourth year to assist families with tax benefit information and FREE Tax Filing Services.

The department’s Career Plus center has created a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site.  The site will provide families who have worked full or part-time, have been laid-off from their current jobs or have worked a portion of the year in 2007 but made less than $40,000 per family with tax preparation, earned income tax  and child tax credits and electronic filing.

Many Wilson County families benefit from this free service.  For the 2006 tax season, Social services’ Career Plus center served 467 customers and filed more than a half-million dollars in refunds for working families.

“We want people to take advantage of this free service,” said Amber Denning, Human Services coordinator.  “Family budgets are tight and this directly benefits families by saving them money.”

Tax preparation services will take place in the Career Plus office, 114 Pine St., NE, Wilson, NC.  The hours of operation January 24, 2007 through February 16, 2007 will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Hours of operation February 19, 2007 through April 10, 2007 will be Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The office will be closed on March 22 in observance of Good Friday.  Appointments for tax preparation can be scheduled by calling (252) 293-4305 after January 9, 2007.  We will be e-filing returns to expedite refund returns.

For further information contact Silvia Sugg, VITA Coordinator at (252) 265-5362 or (252) 293-4326.
