Lady Falcons falter at away games13 December 2007 – The ladies’ basketball team at Aycock struggled this week, falling to 1-8 with three losses on the road. Tuesday night, the girls played hard, earning a five-point lead by halftime. The girls continued with a four-point lead at the end of the last period, but the final period proved to be the turning point of the game. Coach Carrie Reynell said the defense wasn’t there, giving up 29 points in eight minutes, and the offense, which held a small lead much of the game, didn’t push hard enough to surmount that loss. The girls finished the night with a 52-42 loss to Greene Central. Chantel Gaines was far and away the lead scorer for the night, with 25 points to her name. Courtney Sheeks was the next highest, with nine points. Yolanda Pitt had four points, and Paige Garrett and Tori Benton each had two points. At Goldsboro on Friday night, the girls fell behind early, and despite playing a strong second half, couldn’t catch up to the Lady Cougars, who won 81-67. The girls fell behind early, with Goldsboro outscoring them 24-9 in the first period. After halftime, the girls returned to the court to redeem themselves and close in the 18-point defecit. Despite earning 45 of their 67 points in the second half, the ladies couldn’t dig out of the hole they slipped into early in the game. Coach Reynell praised the effort of her team in the second half. “I feel confident in saying that if we would have played with that kind of intensity the whole game, it would have been a much different game,” she said. Gaines had an extraordinary night Friday as well, earning 30 points for the Lady Falcons. Pitt had 14 points, while Sheeks had 12. Garrett and Felder had four points, and Benton had three. Thursday night was a similar story for the ladies, falling behind early and never quite catching up to Southwest Edgecombe, finishing with a 63-30 loss. Gaines had 20 points, while Garrett was the next highest with 4. Benton and Pitt each had two. The ladies will play two home games this week to round out the first half of the season. The Falcons host Clayton next Thursday and will entertain Wilson Hunt next Friday night.
