deaths & funerals7 December 2007 ADRIAN G. HOWELL Adrian Gray Howell, 63, of Eureka, died Thursday, December 6. Mr. Howell was a former member of the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department and had served on the Eureka Town Council. He had served in the Army Reserves and was a member of the Eureka United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, P.R. "Zeke" and Edna Gray Howell and a son, Adrian Scott Howell. Funeral services will be Monday, December 10 at 3 p.m. at Eureka United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ed Drew and Dr. De Wayne Eakes. Interment will be in Eureka Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Linda Sauls Howell; sons, Jeff Howell and wife, Nancy, Stevie Howell and wife, Garianne, and Brandon Howell and wife, Jennifer, all of Eureka; grandchildren, Scott, Adrienne, Nathan, Braden and Logan Howell, Amber Lancaster, Gray and Toby Howell; brothers, Gerald Howell and wife, Deborah, and Jimmy Howell and wife, Jeanette, all of Goldsboro; sister, Betty Daw and husband, David, of Goldsboro. 6 December 2007 CAROLYN M. CARTER Carolyn Murray Carter, 62, of Goldsboro, died Saturday, December 1 at Wilson Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Everette Murray and Blonnie Murray of Middlesex; and a grandson, Donald Steed. She attended Evansdale United Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 4 at 2 p.m. at Shingleton Funeral Home in Wilson. She is survived by her husband, Lester "Junior" Carter;; daughter, Renee Quinn and husband, Kelly, of Trinity; sons, David Earp of Fountain, Lee Earp and wife, Melissa, of Pikeville, Phillip Earp of Goldsboro; two granddaughters, Christina Earp and Elizabeth Earp.
EDNA WEST HARE Edna Mae West Hare, 85, of Wilson, formerly of Belfast community, died Sunday, December 2. She was the widow of Quinton R. Hare. EVELYN B. HOLLAND Evelyn Boyette Holland, 77, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, December 5 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Evelyn was born in Wayne County on August 16, 1930 to the late Ralph Boyette and Mabel Strickland Boyette Gardner. She was an active member of the Salvation Army Church in her youth and had been an active member of the Salvation Army's Women's Home League Ministry for the last several years. Evelyn attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church for many years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at The First Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Jimmy Whitfield, the Rev. Morris Smith and Major Andrew Wiley officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. Evelyn is survived by her husband, George Holland; her daughter, Kathy Fay Holland of the home; her sisters, Vennie Lee Moore and husband, Jack, of Goldsboro and Mabel Louise "Bootsie" Smith and husband, Donnie, of Goldsboro; her brothers, Ray Boyette and wife, Doris, of Goldsboro, Linwood Earl "Jack" Boyette and wife, Dorothy, of Goldsboro and Heyward Boyette and wife, Kathy, of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her baby daughter. The family will receive friends Friday, December 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
THURMAN 'T.J.' JONES Thurman E. Jones, 79, of Kenly, died at his home on Saturday, December 1. He was born in Wayne County on March 15, 1928 to Sherman and Clara Hall Jones, who preceded him in death. Also preceding Thurman in death were a daughter, Carlotta Richardson; a brother, Edroy Jones; and sister, Patsy Coley. Services for Mr. Jones were held at noon Wednesday, December 5 at the L.N. Forbes Original Free Will Baptist Tabernacle with Bishop J.N. Perry Jr. presiding and Elder David Hill delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in the Rest Haven Cemetery, Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ada G. Jones; two sons, James Jones and wife, Shirley, of Wilson, and Reggie Jones of Elm City; three daughters, Margie Gooding of Kinston, Lena Diane Burrell and husband, Eugene, of Washington, D.C., and Wilma Jean Jones and husband, Robert, of Kenly; son-in-law, William Richardson; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Lewis of Fremont; two brothers, Aaron Jones of Wilson, Freddie Jones and wife, Grace, of Goldsboro; a special god-daughter, Jenny Herring of Albertson; along with a host of other special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. ELOISE M. LARKIN Eloise Thomasena Middleton Larkin of Goldsboro, wife of the late Francis L. Larkin, died Saturday, December 1. Eloise was the first child of eight children born to John Devine and Lillie Marita Middleton of Kenansville. She taught for many years in both Duplin and Wayne Counties, and was a faithful member of First African Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis L. Larkin; her parents, John and Lillie Middleton; three brothers, Abraham Vincent "A.V.", Johnnye and Theodore; two sisters, Reba and Taritha; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Eloise is survived by her brother, Harvey L. Middleton of New Haven, Conn.; her sister, Roberta LaVerne Middleton Furlow of Hampton, Va.; nieces, Gerardette Marita Furlow of Raleigh, Cherie Denise Furlow of Alexandria, Va., Lisa Valerie Middleton Brown and husband, Marlon, of Atlanta, Ga., and Taritha Lavon Middleton of Milford, Conn.; nephews, David L. Middleton of New Haven, Conn., Dwayne M. Middleton and wife, Rory, of Fairfield, Conn., and Jerome H. Furlow and wife, Chechena, of Lorton, Va.; grand-nieces, Waverly, Sydney and Dylann Middleton, all of Fairfield, Conn., and Londonn Furlow of Lorton, Va.; grand-nephews, Matthew, Nicholas and Joel Brown, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Bryce Furlow of Lorton, Va.; a devoted cousin, Hazel Lillie Middleton Farrior of Kenansville; a goddaughter, Yvonne Stoval of Goldsboro; a good and faithful care provider, Mildred Willis of Fremont; and many other in-laws, neighbors and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 7, at 1 p.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St., Goldsboro, with the Rev. Dr. Louis Leigh Jr., bringing the eulogy. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park-North. On Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Continental Societies will conduct their burial rites, the family will be present and friends are welcome to attend. DAVID J. SASSER David J. Sasser, 75, of Goldsboro, died Sunday, December 2 at Wake Medical Center. Born in Wayne County on November 13, 1932, he was the son of the late Albert and Minnie Killette Sasser. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter; a brother, Thomas Sasser; sisters, Lorraine Sasser, Hazel Seymore and Rachel Martin; and a brother-in-law, David Sykes. He was a member of Pike's Crossroads Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of the Gideon's International. David retired from the Goldsboro Fire Department and was a member of the retired Goldsboro Firefighter's Association. Funeral services will be held Thursday evening, December 6, at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Merrill Davis officiating. Graveside services will be Friday, December 7 at 11 a.m. at the Aycock Family Cemetery. Mr. Sasser is survived by his wife, Harlene Aycock Sasser; two sons, David J. Sasser and wife, Twilla, of Keizer, Oregon, David Brian Sasser of Pinkney; a daughter, Leigh Ann Wyckoff and husband, Douglas, of Pikeville; two stepsons, Richard Sasser and wife, Dana, Rudy Sasser and wife, Joy, all of Pinkney; three sisters, Catherine Sykes of Goldsboro, Margaret Powell and husband, John, of Goldsboro, Joyce Craft and husband, Fred, of Pikeville, Alice Hartley and husband, Pete, of Princeton; a brother, Charlie Sasser and wife, Debbie, of Woodstock, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Friends and family will gather immediately following the service at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home for visitation and fellowship and at other times will be at the home.
