Wrestling team takes first at SE Edgecombe6 December 2007 – Aycock’s wrestling team added another first-place win to their resume this weekend, seizing the top honors at the Pierce-Davis Memorial Tournament at Southwest Edgecombe. The Falcons earned the win with 173 points overall. Three of Aycock’s men also earned first place in their weight classes. Khiry Reid boosted his record to 9-0 with three straight wins to seize first place in the heavyweight class. He started off with a win against Rosewood, and made his way to the finals with a win by pin in 2:56 against White Oak. He won his final match by default because of his Tarboro opponent’s injury. At 119, Drake Gurley earned first place with a pin in 3:35 against White Oak. He also had wins against Rocky Mount, Nash Central, and Eastern Wayne. Jarrett Covar earned the top spot at 215 with a win against local rival Eastern Wayne. He also had wins against North Pitt and Rosewood. Aycock also had three third-place wins from Nick Bently (103), Brandon Bailey (130) and Kevin Carmel (140). Josh Grimes (171) and Justin Farrell (112) earned fourth-place honors in their respective weight classes. Several Aycock wrestlers lost their first match of the season as the Falcons fell to West Johnston in a 43-24 meet on Wednesday. The Falcon grapplers finished with five wins against West Johnston. Justin Farrell (112) and Drake Gurley (119) had a pair of back to back wins. Farrell defeated TJ Supple by pin in 3:27, while Gurley won by decision against Miguel Gutierrez, 8-4. Freddie Coley earned a win by decision, 12-7 over West Johnston’s Mark Landers at 160. Josh Grimes (171) fought it out on the mat with Willie Demrah for five and a half minutes before earning a win by pinning. Heavyweight Khiry Reid also won by pin, taking town James King in 1:37. Aycock was scheduled for a match at Princeton Wednesday night, and will compete in the Rosewood Eagle Invitational at Rosewood this Saturday.
