CBA girls take beating at tournament

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

29 November 2007 — Despite good offensive efforts from the Lady Falcons, too many turnovers in the last few games gave the Aycock girls’ basketball team a 0-3 record after their first week of play.

The ladies started off their season hosting Goldsboro High School last Tuesday night, where they were outscored in all but the final period. Turnovers gave the Cougars a chance to rack up points on the Falcons, which they took advantage of. Goldsboro won the match-up, 54-39.

Chantel Gaines was the lead scorer in Tuesday’s game, with 19 points. Brianna Reid contributed eight points and Yolanda Pitt had six. Paige Garrett, Patrice Pittman, and Courtney Sheeks each had two points.

The ladies kicked off the Falcon Invitational Tournament on Friday night with a ten-point loss to Hoggard. The ladies kept the game close for much of the night, trailing by a mere two points going into the last period. But a high-scoring final period for Hoggard put Aycock in a hole they didn’t have the chance to get out of, giving Hoggard a 47-37 victory for the first round.

Gaines was again the lead scorer with 21 points, while Sheeks had six, Pitt had four, and Stephanie Orosco, Tori Benton, and Reid each had two.

Saturday night, the girls finished out the tournament with a tight game against Western Harnett. The girls came out strong, trailing by one point at half time. But their momentum didn’t continue into the second half, as the girls were outscored by twelve points in that half. Western Harnett earned the victory with a 51-38 lead.

Gaines was the lead scorer Saturday night as well, earning 16 points. Pitt and Benton each had eight points for the night, while Charlie Ipock and Sheeks each had two.
