29 November 2007 — The Aycock boys basketball team waved goodbye to a bitter losing streak in their season opening game last Tuesday night.
Coming off of a 0-25 season, the stakes were high for the Aycock boys as they took on Goldsboro High School in the Falcon’s Nest Tuesday evening. But the win was no simple quest for the Falcons.
The boys started off strong, outscoring the Cougars 12-7 in the first period. But the baskets were few in the second period, leaving the boys in a seven-point hole at halftime.
In the end, it was an explosive offense and tight defense in the fourth period that led the boys to victory. They scored half of their game-total 60 points in the last period, and limited the Cougars to a mere seven points to win the game, 60-52.
Leonard Compton was the boys’ key scorer on Tuesday night, earning 27 points. Jonathan Williams had 10, while Tyheim Pitt had nine, Khendra Reid had five, and Devon Newsome had four. David Gurganus, Isaac Ryals, and Kyle LaFlamme each had two.
Despite their momentum earlier in the week, the Aycock boys came in fourth place at the Falcon Invitational tournament at Aycock last weekend, after two close games against Wayne Country Day and Goldsboro High School.
The boys started off their time in the tournament against Wayne Country Day Friday night, ending with a 42-38 loss for the Falcons.
Aycock led by two baskets at halftime, but were outscored in each of the following periods to allow a narrow win by Wayne Country Day.
Pitt was the game’s lead scorer, with 14 points. Compton had eight, while Reid had seven, LaFlamme had four, Williams earned two, and Jordan Riley had one.
Saturday night’s consolation game offered the chance for Aycock to beat Goldsboro a second time - which they almost did.
The Falcons held a lead going into the final period, after outscoring the Cougars in the first and third periods, and allowing enough from Goldsboro in the second to surmount their lead. But with 17 seconds remaining in the game and the Falcons struggling to take possession of the ball to tie the game, a foul allowed the Cougars to seal the win. Goldsboro took third place in the tourney with their 46-42 victory.
