29 November 2007 — Aycock showed some unexpected strength on the boards against Greene Central Tuesday night as the Falcon boys soared to a relatively easy 50-37 win.
The win evened CBA’s mark on the young season at 2-2.
It was the Rams early who showed the strength on the boards as their speed and rebounding pushed GC to an early 9-4 lead.
CBA started clicking towards the end of the first quarter and tied the score at 13 at the 6:36 mark in the second.
A steal by David Gurganus that he finished off with the layup seemed to fuel the Falcons into the break. That gave CBA the lead, 20-19. After a Ram turnover, Kyle Laflamme hit a short jumper, the Falcon defense drew a charge on the other end, and then Khendra Reid finished off the first half scoring with a layup as CBA held a 24-19 lead at the half.
In the second half, Greene Central switched to a man-to-man defense, and that seemed to pour gasoline on the Aycock flame.
After the Rams hit the first basket of the second half, Aycock went on a 14-5 run to end the quarter. While the shooting percentage wasn’t anything to write home about, the CBA rebounding was outstanding, and the crisp passing started paying off at the end of the quarter, as the Falcons frequently found Reid open under the basket. Gurganus had a pretty hook to protect the ball on a fast break basket at the end of the third quarter as well.
The Rams hit a couple of three-pointers, at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter, but the Falcons kept answering, and GC could get no closer than eight down the stretch.
Reid led all scorers with 18 points, with 14 coming in the torrid second half. Laflamme added ten, Jonathan Williams had nine, and Gurganus had six.
Coach David West commented after the game that his team seems to play well against the man-to-man. They went to a 2-1-2 offense in the second half, and that seemed to open up the game for the post players.
He also said that their first win, in their first game against Goldsboro, coming back to win from 17 down, had been a real shocker, but that this game he believed would be a real confidence booster for his club. “We started answering the question a little bit. We’re not going to win every game, but we showed tonight we can play basketball. Aycock can play basketball.”
