BLET Academy starts in January

29 November 2007 – Wayne Community College is currently enrolling students in its 52nd Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy.

The academy will begin Jan. 7, 2008. Classes will meet 6-10 p.m., Monday-Thursday and at varying times on Saturdays, depending on the type of training. The class will graduate in early August.

WCC’s academy is a rigorous program stressing professionalism, academic achievement, discipline, and officer safety. It is accredited by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and N.C. Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission through the N.C. Community College System.

The BLET program prepares students for careers in a variety of law enforcement professions. It provides the individual with the physical and cognitive skills needed to function as an inexperienced law enforcement officer at an entry-level position.

Since its inception as a curriculum program in 1987, the college’s academy has graduated more than 800 cadets who are now employed in 43 different agencies in this state and many with other organizations outside of North Carolina.

All applicants must be sponsored by a law enforcement agency; complete a BLET application packet; have a complete medical examination; submit a criminal history report and copies of a birth certificate and a high school diploma or equivalent; take a reading comprehension placement test; and have a pre-enrollment conference with the academy’s director. Eligible applicants must be at least 20 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid N.C. Driver’s License, and have no criminal record.

Cost of the course is approximately $750, which includes books, uniforms and supplies.

Potential students should contact Program Director Beverly Deans at bdeans@waynecc.edu or (919) 735-5151, ext. 329 by Jan. 2, 2008.
