Norwayne student's accidental death

29 November 2007 – Monday was a tough day for students at Norwayne Middle School, who returned from Thanksgiving break with the news that a classmate had been hit by a car over the weekend.

Layne Knopick, 11, of Fremont was struck by a car on Church of God Road near the intersection with Highway 111 outside of Goldsboro.

Witnesses said that Knopick and a few friends were walking alongside the road after they had been skateboarding, going back to a home. Knopick’s skateboard got away from him, and he ran into the roadway to retrieve it. He was struck by a car while still in the roadway.

The driver of the vehicle was Khiry Reid, 17, of Goldsboro. Reid, who is student at Charles B. Aycock, will not be charged.

Knopick was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and efforts to revive the boy at the hospital were unsuccessful.

When students returned to school on Monday, counselors and psychologists were on hand to talk with any students who wanted to discuss the loss.

Knopick was a sixth grader at Norwayne.
