LAYNE MICHAEL KNOPICK

Sept. 23, 1996 - Nov. 23, 2007

FREMONT -- Layne Michael Knopick, 11, died suddenly on Friday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident while skateboarding.

Layne was born in Wayne County on Sept. 23, 1996, to Scott Knopick and Xan Benton Knopick. He was a student at Norwayne Middle School, where he was in the sixth grade. Layne was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 12 in Fremont. He attended Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was an acolyte and a member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Layne was an avid skateboarder, and had a great love for music and playing video games.

Funeral will be Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Everett officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister and brother, whom he loved dearly, Skylar Ashlyn Knopick and Braeden Scott Knopick; his maternal grandmother, Marie Fulghum Benton of Goldsboro; his aunts and uncles, Ernie and Beverly Vinson and Mike and Pam Benton, all of Goldsboro; and his cousins, Brittany Vinson and Brandon Vinson.

Layne was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Richard Paul Benton of Goldsboro; his paternal grandmother, Sue Best Knopick of Warren, Pa.; his maternal great-grandparents, Ewell and Bobbie Hooks Fulghum of Fremont and Luby and Gladys Benton of Goldsboro; and his paternal great-grandparents, Robert and Dorothy Best of Silvercreek, N.Y., and George and Caroline Knopick of Ambridge, Pa.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6- 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at 6850 U.S. Hwy. 117 North, Fremont.

RENA BELL GURLEY PIKE

Rena Bell Gurley Pike, 95, of 1889 Hwy 581 N. Pikeville, died Thursday, Nov. 22 at Wilson Medical Center.  She was born May 29, 1912 and was the daughter of the late Lewis Ed and Effie Pate Gurley.  She was the widow of Walter Lee Pike.

Graveside service will be conducted 2:00 pm Sunday, Nov. 25 at Princeton Cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters,  Margaret Hardison of Hampton, VA, Elizabeth Edwards of Kenly and Phyllis Turner of Titusville, FL; a brother,  Raymond Ed Gurley of Newport News, VA; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Saturday, Nov. 24 at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton.

PASTOR THEODORE E. DECKER

21 November 2007 - Pastor Theodore Edwin Decker, 65, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. The Rev. Decker was born May 31, 1942 in Ticonderoga, NY, to the late Robert Louis Decker and Doris Louise Bentley Decker and Doris Louise Bentley Decker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. The Rev. Decker is pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Enfield.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 24 at 22 pm at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tom Harper, Elder John Hess and the Rev. Charles Elvis officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Pastor Decker is survived by his wife, Beverly Willey Decker; his sons, Arthur N. Decker and wife Marcella of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert M. Decker and wife Jamie of Smyrna, Tenn.; his half brother, Robert L. Decker II of Pleasant Gardens; and his grandchildren, Nathan Decker, Matthew Decker, Jonathan Decker, Merlyna Decker, Myleah Decker and Joshua Decker.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 23 from 6 to 8 pm at Seymour Funeral Home.

JAMES ARIC BAKER
15 November 2007 - James Aric Baker, 36, of Burgaw, formerly of Mount Olive, died Thursday, Nov. 15 in Pender County. He was born Jan. 5, 1971 in Sanford, the son of Verlyn Fulghum Baker of Fremont and the late Austin James Baker Jr.

Aric was employed with Burgaw Veterinary Hospital.

In addition to his mother, Aric is survived by his sisters, Pammela S. Baker and husband Darryl Pinner of Burgaw, Dr. Stephanie V. Baker off Burgaw; nieces and nephews, Ella, Adam, Sam, Eli, Noah and Caj; grandmothers, Doris Ellis of Mount Olive and John D. Baker of High Point; aunt, Judy Fuller of Mount Olive; uncle, David Fulghum and wife Donna of Mount Olive; cousins, Henry, Mort, Jody, Scott and George.

A celebration of Aric’s life and time of sharing was held Saturday, Nov. 17 at Burgaw Veterinary Hospital with the Rev. Dean Walker conducting the service.

BILL DEES
William Clarence “Bill” Dees, 67, of Goldsboro, died Sunday evening, November 18, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Bill was born in Wayne County on June 9, 1940 to the late Challis Dumont Dees and Eleanor Janice Smith Dees. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Bill was a long-standing resident of Goldsboro, and was a well known realtor, developer and builder in Wayne County. He was the founder of Century 21 Dees and Tyndall Realtors and the owner of Cambridge Builders. Bill was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, November 21 at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dann Patrick officiating. Burial was to follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
Bill is survived by his wife, Denise Sutton Dees; his daughters, Kelly Denny and husband, Matt, of Victorville, Calif., Tracy Vanderpool and husband, Bryan, of Goldsboro, Billie Pierce and husband, Mark, of Atlanta, Ga.; his brothers, Grover Dees of Smithfield, Charles Dees of Pikeville and Jim Dees; and his grandchildren, Jessica Vanderpool, Taylor Vanderpool, Zachary Deblase, Zeke Deblase, Lucas Denny, Christopher Pierce, Lauren Pierce and Will Pierce.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Faith Free Will Baptist Church, 1200 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
Pallbearers will be Billy Brock, Ricky Hill, Ken Jones, Frank Mitchell, Lester Whitaker and Morris Goodman.

The family received friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home, 202 Ridgewood Drive, Goldsboro.

RICHARD GILMORE
Richard Gilmore, 62, died Monday, November 12.
Richard was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 7, 1945. He was preceded in death by his aunt, Mary Lizzie Ruff.

He is survived by his wife, Valnetta Gilmore; his mother, Eloise Gilmore, three daughters, Christine Sanders and husband, Jermal, of Albuquerque, N.M., Maxine R. Anderson of Pikeville, and Valnetta Foster of Mount Olive; two sons, Kelvin Foster and wife, Stephanie, of Newport News, Va., J.Y. Foster and wife, Cynthia, of Goldsboro; one sister, Kim Toy Mitchell and husband, George, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Kevin Benjamin Gilmore of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Homecoming services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 17 at “The Sanctuary” at True Vision Ministries, Inc., 401 W. Main St., Pikeville, with Pastor James E. Williams, MPA, officiating.

Antioch Turkey Shoot

Antioch Fire Department will have its annual Turkey Shoot on Friday and Saturday nights, November 9-10, 16-17, and Wednesday, November 21. Cost will be $3.00 per shot and prizes include: turkeys, hams, sausage (link & patty), pork chops, and picnics.  The Fire Department is located on Hwy. 111 North and Big Daddy's Rd. across from Northeast Elementary School.  Shoot starts at 6:30 p.m.

Miss Stantonsburg pageant

The search is underway for Miss Stantonsburg 2007-2008. If you are a girl attending high school and living within two miles of the town limits, you can apply to carry the title and wear the Miss Stantonsburg Crown.

Entrants must fill out an application and be able to present a special talent upon request. There is a $10 entry fee, which should be paid at the time you pick up an application from the town hall. Completed applications are due back at town hall no later than November 20.

The competition will be November 27 at 7:30, immediately following the regular meeting of the Kiwanis Club. Additional information is on the application forms. Eureka Christmas parade

The Eureka Christmas Parade will be December 9 at 3:00. Line up time will be at 2:00.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2008  

On January 21, 2008 the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Committee in conjunction with the City of Goldsboro and Wayne County will host the 20th observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

Ads may be purchased for the souvenir program booklet. The deadline for all ads is Friday, December 14.

For a $5 donation to the Wilson Jaycees, your child/adult can receive a personalized letter from Santa. This project is open to ALL ages because adults often enjoy receiving letters from Santa as well!

Festival of Trees

The Family Support Network of Eastern North Carolina will present its Festival of Trees from November 28 through December 21 at the Greenville Convention Center, 303 Southwest Greenville Blvd., Greenville.
Admission is free to see 100 holiday tree wonderland. Reservations are required for Story Time and Photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus, which costs $8 with one child in picture, $10 for two, and $12 for three. Reservations are also required for the live and silent auction and preview cocktail and hors d’oeuvres party, on November 30, which costs $30 for one and $50 for a couple.
All proceeds go toward providing emotional support and resource information for families who have a child with a chronic illness, premature birth, or disability, or who have experienced the death of a child.

Medicare plan D help

Open enrollment for Medicare D is through December 31, 2007. This is the time to change your drug plan, or get out of a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Wayne County Services on Aging, 100 John Street in Goldsboro, has Medicare counselors available. Appointments can be made on Tuesdays from 11-4, and other days on a limited basis. Call 731-1591 for an appointment.
WAGES, at 601 E. Royal Avenue in Goldsboro, is offering appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Call Terry Davis, Medicare Counselor, at 734-1178 ext. 205 to set up an appointment.

Christmas tree sale

St. Luke United Methodist Church will have a Christmas Tree lot on Wayne Memorial Drive, next to CVS Pharmacy and across from Wendy’s. They will begin selling freshly-cut Frasier Fir trees on Thanksgiving afternoon, with size ranging from table-top to ceiling-high. All net proceeds will benefit Goldsboro’s St. Luke United Methodist Church ministries. Santa will also make visits to the tree sale.

Storytime for preschoolers

Preschool story time for children ages 2-5 is held at the Fremont Library on Monday mornings at 10 a.m. Children are invited to come and participate in songs, craft projects, and the reading of fun books.
