Sheep thief arrested

8 November 2007 — On October 28, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sheep being stolen from the Governor Charles B. Aycock Birthplace outside of Fremont. On October 31, after a tip from Bill Bennett on Bartlett Road, Detectives of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate and retrieve the sheep named “Annabelle.”

Further investigation by the Sheriff Detective and with tips from other concerned citizens, a suspect was identified and an arrest was made. The suspect, David Allen Smith of 341 Bartlett Road, Pikeville, admitted to Detective/Sgt. Carl Lancaster that he was planning on eating Annabelle. Smith was charged with one count of Felony Pursuing or Injuring Livestock with the Intent to Steal and Convert the same to his own Use. He was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $1500.00 secured bond.

Annabelle is safe and home and recovering.
