Toler takes Pigskin win

8 November 2007 — The Pigskin Pickin’ Contest was on some unprecedented ground this weekend.

With a rash of upsets over the weekend, State topping Miami, Carolina topping Maryland, and Virginia topping Wake Forest, there were tough times picking the winners. In fact, no one got all six games correct.

That thinned the ranks at the top of the Pigskin pickers, and with another offensive landslide in the tie-breaker a too familiar name surfaced.

Dean Sauls, Wayne County Athletic Director, Eureka native and former CBA staffer, who last week swept both the Wayne-Wilson News Leader Pigskin Pickin’ Contest and that of our sister paper in Princeton, also won the contest in the Princeton paper this week. His 5-1 record on this paper’s contest, along with his prediction of a 35-20 ECU win over Memphis in the tie-breaker looked like another winner.

In stepped Lee Toler of Fremont, who guessed a 37-30 ECU win, besting Mr. Sauls, twelve points closer to the actual 56-40.

Also falling short in the tie-breaker were: James Ballance, H.T. Grantham, and Craig Partin.

The close but no cigar goes to: Ronnie A. Barnes, Lanell Brown, Brady Grantham, David Hill, Devone Jones, Curtis Neal, Mario Re, Nathaniel L. Sanders Jr., Abbie Shackleford, Jim Shackleford, Denny Tart, Stephen Tart, James Vinson and Eddie Yelverton.

Courtesy call for valiant efforts go to: Todd Rose, Harold Richardson and Jay Shackleford.

We’ve got two more tickets for the Tulane at ECU game, just like Mr. Toler won, and Mr. Sauls won and won and won, up for grabs this week. And who knows, it could be you that sits with them at the game. But first you have to enter.

Cut out the entry in today’s paper and fill it out, mail it in, or bring it by our office, all by 5 p.m. Friday, or enter online before 5 p.m. Friday.
