New faces for area town boards

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

8 November 2007 — Voters in the area elected to see a lot of change in their local governments Tuesday night, according to unofficial results released by local boards of election. Though a few incumbents, including Fremont Mayor Devone Jones, were re-elected, many local boards will see fresh faces in votes that were close across the board.

In Fremont, Mayor Jones was elected to his third term with 100 votes, 37 percent of the votes. Challenger Darron Flowers came in second with 34 percent of the vote with 92 votes, while Amy Price had 28 percent.

In District 1, the only of the seven Fremont districts where the incumbent candidate was challenged, voters will have to vote in a run-off to determine the winner. Both Billy Harvey and his challenger Al Lewis got 11 votes, putting the vote in a perfect split.

In Pikeville, voters chose a mix of candidates as their front-runners, electing an incumbent, a returning commissioner, and a new face. Al Greene was voted into a third term as a town commissioner with 18 percent of the vote. Vance Greeson, a former member of the Pikeville board, was elected with 19 percent of the vote. And Dennis Lewis captured the third available seat with 18 percent of the vote. The town’s other incumbent, Bruce Thomas, will not have a fourth term on the board, coming in with 16 percent of the vote. Newcomers Talmage “Thigie” Thigpen and Todd Anderson earned 15 and 11 percent of the vote, respectively, and nine percent of the votes went to write-in candidates.

Eureka’s election was held entirely with write-in votes to fill its three open spots. Incumbent commissioner Myrtie Sauls was the lead vote earner, with 24 votes. Doug Booth was next with 18 votes, and Jose DeJesus took the third seat with 16 votes. Eureka had a total of 27 voters for this election.

Over in Wilson County, voters also voted to see a change in leadership. Bill Edmundson, who ran unopposed, will take the mayor’s seat with 112 votes.

For the town council, incumbent Hubert Tyson led in votes with 62 ballots cast for him. Tommy Darden will take the second available seat with 60 votes.

As Mr. Edmundson moves to the position of mayor, his seat will open a third spot at the table. It is anticipated that the seat will go to the next-highest vote-getter, which is Ken Horne with 59 votes. Incumbent Billie Bardin earned 51 votes, while newcomer H. Powell Dew earned 9.

For the Northern Wayne Sanitary district, the voters had a choice of five of six candidates. Wayne Aycock led the vote with 19 percent, and David Pittman followed closely with 18 percent. Walter Bridgers and Bill Lynch, Jr. each earned 17 percent. James Kirby had 16 percent of the vote, and Kenneth Tucker had 13 percent.

A date for the runoff election for Fremont’s District 1 has not been announced.
