Falcons end season in fourth place

8 November 2007 — The Falcon football season came to an end Friday night as the Aycock boys lost 41-16 to Southern Wayne, who claimed the conference championship this season.

Coming off of Monday night’s win, the Falcons had a lot of momentum early in the game. But that momentum wasn’t enough to hold off the fierce Saint offense.

Aycock snagged an early lead with a touchdown pass, caught by Jacob Pendleton. A few turnovers later, the Southern Wayne offense sent one to the end zone. A failed kick left Aycock in the lead, but just barely.

An unfortunate mistake on the Falcon’s next possession gave Southern Wayne the advantage. A punt from Bryant Hill was misjudged and bounced off the back of an Aycock player. Southern Wayne recovered the ball, and scored three plays later. After a two-point conversion the Saints seized a 14-7 lead.

After a third touchdown from Southern Wayne near the top of the third quarter, the Falcons waged an effort to battle back. But each Aycock effort was answered with a bigger push from the Saints.

Alex Roosin pushed the score to 21-10with a field goal near the midpoint of the fourth quarter, but a Southern Wayne 61-yard touchdown followed shortly after. Less than a minute later, the Saints earned a fifth touchdown to increase the gap 34-10.

The Falcons pushed out one more scoring drive with a run by Kelton Lewis near the end of the third quarter to close the gap to 34-16. But it seemed that the Saints were just finding their drive, scoring a final touchdown in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Ian Calder and Tyheim Pitt led the Falcons in rushing, with 54 and 53 yards each, respectively. Lewis had 25 yards, while Pendleton had 23.

Calder also completed 7 passes for a total of 140 yards. Combined with the 154 yards on the ground, the Falcons earned a total of 294 yards of offense Friday night.

Defensively, Kendre Reid and Chris Bryant led the team in tackles, with six each. Michael King and Hill each had five, while Calder and Kevin Petticoffer each had three. Michael Jennings, Blake Cooper, Jarrett Covar, Anthony Holder, Justin Ivers, and Tyheim Pitt all had a pair of tackles for the night.

The Falcons finished the season 3-7 overall, and 2-3 for the ECC, landing them just behind Beddingfield for fourth place in the conference.
