Season ends with Vail's departure

1 November 2007 — The season came to an end for the Aycock varsity tennis team Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Falcons lost out to Eastern Wayne, the team responsible for ending their conference winning streak earlier this season, in the 3A Dual Team playoff match at Herman Park.

Coach Luke Vail commended his girl's efforts, noting strong wins from several players.

"Ashley Howell played an oustanding match," he said. "Courtney Barnes and Kristen Bennett played some of their finest tennis of the season."

Barnes, Bennet, and Howell all notched singles wins. The doubles team of Barnes and Emilee Quinn also earned a win. The Falcon ladies were just one win short of a victory, ending their playoff run with a 5-4 loss.

Coach Vail said that the Eastern Wayne team simply had more depth than Aycock, which led to their victory.

"They did a much better job of playing aggressive tennis and putting the ball away at the net," he said.

The ladies finished their season with an overall record of 14-8.

Also on Wednesday, Coach Vail announced that this game was his final match as an Aycock tennis coach. He will step down after 29 years as the ladies' coach, leaving a legacy of a state championship and 305 straight conference wins.

"I am really happy for all of our players over the years, and it's been an experience I will never forget," he said. "I enjoyed every minute of it and I hope that CBA tennis will continue on a sucessful path."

He said he plans to continue teaching, and looks forward to having the time to watch his nephew Blake Vail play tennis for CBA.
