Six seconds spells victory for Aycock, 17-131 November 2007 — Monday night’s match up between Aycock and Eastern Wayne had local football fans on the edge of their seats up through the last few seconds. Though Eastern Wayne boasted more season wins this year, both teams entered the stadium with matching conference records of 1-2. But late in the game Friday night, Aycock seized the lead with a field goal to win 17-14. The game got off to a strong start, with both teams making several turnovers on downs before anyone made real progress downfield. Aycock scored the first touchdown near the end of the first quarter. A 35-yard pass from Ian Calder to Jacob Pendleton put the Falcons on the board, and a successful kick from Alex Roosin set the score at 7-0. It looked like the Falcons were about to add another touchdown to their score midway through the second quarter, but a mistake allowed the Warriors to jump into the mix. An Aycock pass at the 3-yard line was snatched up by Eastern Wayne. The carrier then charged 97 yards to return the recovery for a touchdown. A PAT attempt left Aycock with a marginal one-point lead, which they held until the fourth quarter. With 6:39 remaining in the game, Eastern Wayne pushed ahead with a five-yard run for a second touchdown. A successful two-point conversion gave the Warriors a 14-7 lead over Aycock. But on a lucky play with three minutes remaining, Kelton Lewis grabbed an Eastern Wayne fumble at the 14-yard line, and raced the ball into the end zone to tie the game 14-14. With seconds remaining and Aycock within view of the goal line, Tyheim Pitt, the lead runner for the game, came out of the game with a minor injury. After a brief time-out, the Falcons decided to try for a field goal. Roosin’s 28-yard kick sailed between the bars with 6.9 seconds left, winning the game for Aycock. Aycock gained 204 yards rushing, while the Falcon defense limited Eastern Wayne to almost half of that total. Pitt led the Falcons with 74 yards, while Kelton Lewis had 41 yards. Ian Calder had 33, Blake Cooper gained 23, and Jacob Pendleton had 18. Calder also threw for 77 yards in the air. In addition to two passes to Pendleton for 42 yards, he sent three passes to Lewis for a total of 18 yards, and one 17-yard pass to Dalton Lewellen. Aycock will end the regular season Friday night as they host Southern Wayne. The Saints come into the game with a perfect conference record of 4-0, and an overall season record of 6-4. The Falcons improved to 3-6 overall this week, with a split 2-2 conference record.
