DSS prepares for heating assistance

25 October 2007 — Despite the recent warm weather, colder weather months are just ahead and the Wilson County Department of Social Services is preparing to help families that may need assistance with their energy bill.  The Low Income Energy Assistance Program starts November 5.  The federal program provides a one-time payment in February to eligible households to assist with heating expenses.

DSS officials encourage families that need help to apply.  “Heating and energy costs continue to rise. This impacts many family budgets and our agency wants to assist those in need.  There are eligible citizens that do not apply and we want to reach those individuals as well,” said Evelyn Scott, family services program manager.

Most families and individuals receiving food assistance through the department are automatically eligible and will receive letters stating their eligibility.  These families do not have to apply.  Families and individuals who are not automatically eligible will be notified by mail that they should apply.

Applications will be accepted November 5 through November 16 at the Wilson County Department of Social Services, 100 W. Gold St. from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the exception of November 12, Veteran’s Day.

Eligibility Requirements:
• An applicant’s October income must meet the income guidelines, which is 110% of the poverty income limit.
-1 Person household - $936.00
-2 person household – $1225.00
-3 person household - $1574.00
-4 person household - $1893.00
• Have assets less than $2,200
• Subject to the rising cost of heating and has a heat source
• Meet citizenship requirements

Elderly and disabled individuals who are not food assistance recipients may send a representative to apply for assistance for them or contact DSS at 206-4100 during the application time frame for an interview over the phone.
