DSS prepares for heating assistance25 October 2007 — Despite the recent warm weather, colder weather months are just ahead and the Wilson County Department of Social Services is preparing to help families that may need assistance with their energy bill. The Low Income Energy Assistance Program starts November 5. The federal program provides a one-time payment in February to eligible households to assist with heating expenses. Most families and individuals receiving food assistance through the department are automatically eligible and will receive letters stating their eligibility. These families do not have to apply. Families and individuals who are not automatically eligible will be notified by mail that they should apply. Applications will be accepted November 5 through November 16 at the Wilson County Department of Social Services, 100 W. Gold St. from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the exception of November 12, Veteran’s Day. Eligibility Requirements: Elderly and disabled individuals who are not food assistance recipients may send a representative to apply for assistance for them or contact DSS at 206-4100 during the application time frame for an interview over the phone.
