CBA falls to Hunt at home

25 October 2007 — Last Friday night ended with another “almost” for the Charles B. Aycock football team.

The boys, who have played well all season, lost to Hunt 19-12 to bring their season record to 2-6.

Despite an overall strong showing for the Falcons and a tightly-played game, the Warriors came away with the win after two key plays in the last few minutes.  A handful of mistakes from Aycock allowed Hunt to mount an early lead, and then reclaim that edge at the end of the night.

Hunt started off in charge, earning 10 points in the first quarter with  a touchdown about halfway through the quarter and a field goal with  a little over three minutes remaining.

But as the defense held the Warriors back from another scoring drive, a fire was lit under the Falcons.

Kicker Alex Roosin started the scoring with a 28-yard field goal with 3:41 remaining in the quarter. Ian Calder nudged the score to nine, dashing five yards and crossing the goal line with less than thirty seconds remaining in the quarter. The Falcon fans held their breath as Roosin tried for a PAT to tie the score, but the boys went into the half down one point.

The Falcon defense continued to push the Warriors back in the third quarter, but this time Hunt returned the favor, and the score remained 10-9 going into the fourth.

A 22-yard field goal from Roosin a minute and a half into the final quarter gave Aycock the edge, boosting the score to 12-10.

With less than four minutes to go, Hunt retrieved its lead with a field goal, bringing the score to 13-12. But it was still anybody’s game.

But an interception by Hunt with less than a minute left sealed the Warrior’s victory. The interception was returned 34 yards for a touchdown, giving Hunt a 19-12 lead with 26 seconds remaining.

Aycock’s defense was fierce Friday night, limiting the Warriors to a mere 23 yards of total offense. They also allowed no first downs from Hunt.

Jarrett Covar led the defense with eight tackles and one assist. Khendre Reid had six tackles and two assists, while Chris Bryant had four tackles and two assists. Nick Redding and Michael King each had a fumble recovery.

The Aycock offense, on the other hand, kept things moving along, earning a respectable 132 yards of total offense, with 107 coming on the ground. Tyheim Pitt led the Falcons in rushing, with 52 yards on 15 runs. Ian Calder had 28 yards on 15 runs. Kelton Lewis had 16 yards, and Jacob Pendleton had 15 while Devon Newsome added three.

Calder added another 25 yards in the air, with two passes.

Friday’s loss put the Falcons at a split record of1-1 for the season. They will have their next chance to chalk up a win as they host Eastern Wayne at Hardy Talton Field on Friday night.
