Eureka, DOT work to fix drainage problems4 October 2007 — The NC DOT will be replacing and enlarging drainage tile in Eureka to help ease flooding that occurs in heavy rains. Commissioner Myrtie Sauls reported during Tuesday night’s regular Eureka Town Board meeting discussing with DOT officials the condition and capacity of tiles, particularly in the Ruritan Building and old school area. There were several driveway tiles which the town will replace. They will talk with Heart of David Ministries, which operates out of the old school, about possibly helping pay for the tile. She specified that the tile under the road at the Ruritan Building would be upsized, from a 36” to a 48”. There was also significant discussion of the tile at Buck Godwin’s property, and possibly upsizing the tile there. While DOT will pay for some tile, other tile would be paid for by the town with DOT taking care of the installation. Mayor Stephen Howell led a discussion on drainage at the old supermarket. While there had been a catch basin proposed to help drainage in the area, he suggested that if the road was repaved, that would raise the level of the road, making rainwater more prone to run into the ditching at the store. He also suggested repaving the parking lot of the store to avoid pooling in the parking lot. Commissioner Wayne Taylor suggested the town ask for sealed manhole covers on several streets prone to flooding in heavy rains. He also expressed concern that yards had not been repaired following sewer work. Commissioner Billy Martin said they were probably waiting for some rain and settlement before doing the work. Mrs. Sauls added, “Most people are probably glad to see something get done.” Mr. Taylor questioned how some of the new cleanouts had been installed, and the board agreed to go around and check the cleanouts around town. Mr. Martin asked that something be done about vandalism in the town. Mayor Howell and Mrs. Sauls agreed. Mayor Howell noted that much of the vandalism is apparently occurring late at night and in the early morning, between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. The mayor said he would contact the sheriff’s department about the issue. There was also some discussion about sidewalks, but with another two months of work expected on the sewer lines in town, the board agreed it would be premature to bring concerns until the project was ready for a punch list.
