CBA tennis at 7-1 for conference

4 October 2007 — The Charles B. Aycock varsity tennis team split their games this week, winning in a conference match against Wilson Hunt but falling to Greene Central.

The ladies faced Hunt on Thursday, earning a 7-2 win to boost their conference record to 7-1 for the season. The ladies won five of the six singles matches, with Kristen Prosser, Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, and Jessica Davis all seizing a win.

The Aycock ladies earned wins in the number one and two doubles matches, with wins from Barnes-Quinn and Prosser-Bennett.

Coach Luke Vail expressed enthusiasm about his team’s playing on Thursday, saying it was some of the best he’d seen from the girls all season.

“They did a good job of putting the ball away at the net,” he said. “Our volleys and overheads were the best that they have been all year.”

Monday, the Lady Falcons traveled to take on non-conference rivals Greene Central. And though the girls only managed three wins for the day, Coach Luke Vail praised the performance of those winners.

“Greene Central’s depth in the lineup was too much for us to overcome,” he said. “Courtney Barnes played outstanding tennis at number two singles, and our number one and two doubles both played very well.”

Barnes notched the only singles win in a 6-3, 6-0 set. The teams of Barnes-Quinn and Prosser-Bennett both claimed doubles wins with a score of 8-6.

The junior varsity’s record paralleled the varsity girls, with a win against Southern Wayne on Wednesday and a loss to Greene Central Monday.

The JV Lady Falcons swept Southern Wayne, winning nine matches and only allowing a score from their opponent in three of the singles matches.

But Monday, the Rams proved to be too much for the JV Falcons. The Aycock ladies’ only wins of the night came from first seed Hollie Baker and fourth seed Nicole Kessler. Baker earned an 8-3 win, while Kessler finished with a final of 8-2.

The varsity team was set to play at Eastern Wayne on Tuesday, while the JV will host Southern Wayne on Thursday.
