deaths & funerals28 September 2007 CAROL E. BASS Ruby Carol Edmundson Bass, 73, of Eureka, died Sunday, September 23. Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eureka United Methodist Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Interment was 10 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday) at Eureka Cemetery. Surviving is her husband, Emerson Bass Sr; daughters, Pam Bass of Eureka, Brenda Proctor and husband, Larry, of Pikeville; sons, Emerson Bass Jr., of Eureka, Mickey Bass of Pikeville, Ricky Bass and wife, Kitzi, of Goldsboro; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Crocker, 74, of Kenly, died Friday, September 21 at his home. The funeral was at 11 a.m. Monday, September 24 at Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church. The Revs. Ray Creech and Lewis Godwin officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Sarah Creech Crocker; two daughters, Marie Hare of Middlesex and Deborah Johnson of Kenly; three brothers, Wilbert Crocker and Ralph Crocker, both of Kenly, and Jimmy Crocker of Lucama; two sisters, Beulah Price of Fremont and Lucille Massey of Spring Hope; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Condolences to the family may be made at www.parrishfh.com. BASCOM P. EDWARDS Bascom P. Edwards, 94, of Fremont, died Sunday, September 23 in Melbourne, Fla. Graveside will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 28 at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont. Pastor H. Powell Dew will officiate. Visitation will be afterwards at Fremont Missionary Baptist Church. ELLIS Kenneth Buren Ellis, 42, of Pikeville, died Saturday, September 22 at his home. Born in Wayne County on December 25, 1964,, he was the son of the late Buren Lee Ellis. He was employed as a mechanic with R. N. Rouse Co. Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, September 25 at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Willard Hardison officiating. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Ellis; a son, Christopher Ken Ellis of the home; a daughter, Rachel Rudisill of Goldsboro; two step-daughters, Renee Evans of Garner, Michelle Evans of Pikeville; his mother and stepfather, Anne Sutton Epps and husband, James, of Snow Hill; his stepmother, Hilda E. GRAY Marie Dixon Gray, 80, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died Sunday, September 23 at her home. She was predeceased by her husband, James O. Gray and a son, Matthew Gray. A graveside service was held in the Snow Hill Cemetery yesterday (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. She is survived by three children, Jimmy Gray, Marsha Ratcliff and Joyce Silver, all of Virginia; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Louise Ginn Edwards of Pikeville and Melba Parker of Tarboro. ANN HOOD HUNT Ann Hood Hunt, 76, of Stantonsburg, died Saturday, September 22. She was the widow of Chester "Arnie" Hunt, who died in 1989, and daughter of the late Thomas Jordan and Hazel Seymour Hood of the Grantham community. She was librarian and later a secretary at Stantonsburg Elementary School for 26 years. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 24 at Stantonsburg Cemetery. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Joe Hedrick of Henderson; sons and daughter-in-law, Chet Hunt of Charlotte and Phil and Donna Hunt of Sanford; four grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Bryan of Goldsboro. KEECH Carlton Gene Keech, 67, of Goldsboro, died Friday, September 21 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, September 23, in the Minshew-Coley Chapel. Burial followed at Kenly Cemetery. Mr. Keech was a retired boiler operator at Bridgestone-Firestone for 30 years. Survivng are his wife, Peggy Minshew Keech; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Larry Sadler of Swanquarter; a son, Carlton Keech Jr. of Belhaven; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Danny and Loretta Evans of Fremont; Roger and Dina Evans of LaGrange; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Faye Keech and Virginia and Billy Cooper, and Shirley Keech, all of Washington; two brothers, James Keech of Goldsboro and Marvin "Buck" Keech of Washington; a sister-in-law, Jean Keech of Goldsboro; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. MARGUERITE A. WINBON Marguerite Anderson Winbon, 74, of Raleigh, formerly of Fremont, died Saturday, September 15. She was the widow of Carl J. Winbon and had resided in Raleigh in recent years with her daughter, Donna. Marguerite was born in Maryland to the late Claus Alfred and Bertha Marshall Anderson. Preceding her were sisters, Velva Coon of Salem, Ore., and Betty Blakeman of Lexington, Ky. She worked with Wayne County for 26 years. Upon her retirement in 1992, the Wayne County Fireman's Association awarded her the G. Edgar Summerlin Fireman of the Year Award. She was also instrumental in organizing women's auxiliaries within the Fremont Fire Department and Fremont Rescue Squad. Funeral services were held Saturday morning, September 22, at Elmwood Cemetery, New Section, Fremont, with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating. Surviving is her daughter, Donna Winbon; son, Doug Winbon of Deep Gap; granddaughter, Jenna Winbon of Boone; brother-in-law, Robert Blakeman of Lexington, Ky.; sisters-in-law, Edna Earle Pippin of Fremont and Kay Goggin of Hixon, Texas; and eight nieces and nephews in North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Oregon.
