JAMES P. BASS SR. James Phillip Bass Sr., 62, of Goldsboro, died Saturday evening, September 15, at Wake Medical Center. James was born in Durham County on August 14, 1945 to the late John Bass and Eula Mae Casey Bass. He was a retired truck driver from Stackhouse in Goldsboro. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, September 18, at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Princeton Cemetery. James is survived by his wife, Margie Turner Bass; his children, Teresa Williamson and special friend, Robert Perry, of Goldsboro, Linda McCarty and husband, Tim, of Goldsboro, Connie Hough and husband, Larry, of Goldsboro, Steve Bass and wife, Machelle, of Goldsboro, James Phillip Bass Jr. and wife, Dawn, of Pikeville and Christie Parrish and husband, Daniel, of Princeton; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Betty Eason of Selma, Rosa Kornegay of Pikeville and Sadie Edmundson of LaGrange; and his brother, John Bass and wife, Gertrude, of Asheville.
NANCY J. SAULS Nancy Jernigan Sauls, 94, of Eureka, died Tuesday, September 18 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Funeral services will be held Friday evening, September 21, at 7 p.m. at Mount Nelson Baptist Church in Eureka. The Rev. James Medlin will officiate. Visitation will follow the service. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Eureka Cemetery. Mrs. Sauls was born on March 10, 1913, to the late Lonnie and Myrtie Jernigan. She was a longtime member of Mount Nelson Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, J.T. Sauls, and his wife, MaryEllen, of Eureka; three sisters, Bernice Bradshaw and Gladys Reeves, both of Wilson, and Myrtie Lee Tingen of Florence, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Betty Corbett of Eureka; six grandchildren, Nancy Lynn Graham, of Folsom, Calif., Nelson Stafford of Harrisburg, Pa., Kelly Hill, Carol Gray, Cheryl Bass, and Chris Sauls, all of Eureka; and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sauls was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Sauls and a son, Jesse Corbett. Arrangements by Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 N. Pine St., Fremont, where condolences may be directed to www.shackleford-howell.com. MARGUERITE A. WINBON Marguerite Anderson Winbon, 74, of Raleigh, formerly of Fremont, died Saturday, September 15. She was the widow of Carl J. Winbon and had resided in Raleigh in recent years with her daughter, Donna. Marguerite was born in Maryland to the late Claus Alfred and Bertha Marshall Anderson. Preceding her were sisters, Velva Coon of Salem, Ore., and Betty Blakeman of Lexington, Ky. In Wayne County, she worked with the county for 26 years of which 21 were as secretary to the county Fire Marshall. Upon her retirement in 1992, the Wayne County Fireman's Association awarded her the G. Edgar Summerlin Fireman of the Year Award. She remains the only non-firefighter to earn the Award. In 1979, the "Woman of the Year Award" was presented by the Wayne County Fireman's Ladies Auxiliary, an organization she helped create. She was also instrumental in organizing women's auxiliaries within the Fremont Fire Department and Fremont Rescue Squad. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 22 at Elmwood Cemetery, New Section, Fremont, with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating. Visitation will immediately follow in the Fremont Missionary Baptist Church fellowship hall. Surviving is her daughter, Donna Winbon; son, Doug Winbon of Deep Gap; granddaughter, Jenna Winbon of Boone; brother-in-law, Robert Blakeman of Lexington, Ky.; sisters-in-law, Edna Earle Pippin of Fremont and Kay Goggin of Hixon, Texas; and eight nieces and nephews in North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Oregon.
