Cobras start the year off right20 September 2007 — Middle School sports officially got started this week, with several good showings from Norwayne teams. The girl’s volleyball team started off their season with a win over Mount Olive Middle in four games. The Lady Cobras easily won the first two games, with scores of 25-12 and 25-16. But Mount Olive gained momentum in the third game, winning 25-20 and sending the match into a fourth game. But the Norwayne girls staked their claim, winning the fourth game 25-8. Conner Davis and Brook Dale each had 15 service points in the game, while Ivy Hartsal had 10. The Cobras continued their winning pattern on Monday, beating out Rosewood Middle in three games, with final scores of 25-17 for the first two games and 25-22 for the third. Davis again led service points for the team with 16, while Courtnie Gilbert had nine. A third win against Grantham on Tuesday gave the Cobras a 3-0 for their first week of play. They defeated Grantham in 4 games with final scores of 25-18, 25-14, 24-26, and 25-11. Davis led the offense with 22 servicepoints. Gilbert and Rachel Jordan each had nine. The Cobras’ coed soccer team also got off on the right foot, starting off the season with a 3-3 tie against Mount Olive Middle. Jose Rodriques and Trey Millard led the team offensively with an assist each. Rodriques also scored one of the Cobra’s three goals. Bryan Johnson and Juan Pena also had a goal apiece. Norwayne took seven shots at the goal overall, with three making it in. Meanwhile, Mount Olive took 10 shots, with goalie Kate Ivy making seven saves for the Cobras. Nick Hilker also played an outstanding defensive game against Mount Olive. The soccer team recorded their first win of the season Monday afternoon against visiting Rosewood Middle, 4-3. Rodriques and Millard again led the Cobras offensively, scoring two goals each. Johnson provided a pass for both of Millard’s goals. Cameron Taylor, Madison Mercer, and Hilker provided excellent defense for the Cobras. The soccer and volleyball teams will be at Dillard next Tuesday at 3:45. |
