Aycock's winning streak breaks

20 September 2007 —History was made for the Lady Falcons’ tennis team on Thursday, but not in their favor. Aycock’s 8-1 loss to Eastern Wayne broke a winning streak that stretched across 28 years.

Coach Luke Vail has seen 305 straight wins from his varsity tennis team, but the stretch broke last week as Eastern Wayne recorded a win against the Falcons.

The Warriors swept the ladies in singles, and an 8-4 win from duo Courtney Barnes and Emilee Quinn was the only thing that stood between a complete sweep by the Eastern Wayne ladies.

The girls faced Southern Wayne Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Junior Varsity, however, had a busy week. They squeezed in four games and walked away with three wins, improving their record to 6-3 for the season.

The JV ladies started off the week with a 6-3 loss to Greene Central. Harlie Howard and Nicole Kressler recorded the only singles wins for the Lady Falcons. The girls also earned one doubles win. Abbey Strickland and Nicole Kessler earned an 8-3 win.

But things picked up for the ladies from there. Aycock earned a 7-2 win over Greenfield Academy on Wednesday. Alicia Sodoma, Strickland, Howard and Alexia Torres all earned singles wins, while the ladies swept Greenfield in doubles.

Aycock recorded their first conference win in a tough match against Eastern Wayne on Thursday, with a 5-4 win. Hollie Baker, Strickland, and Kessler all earned singles wins. Doubles wins from second and third seed duos Strickland and Kessler and Farmer and Torres gave Aycock the edge to win. The third seed doubles match proved to be the key point of Thursday’s game. Eastern Wayne had the match point at 7-4 when Farmer and Torres fought back, winning 9-8.
