Fike continues Falcon woes, 21-0

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

20 September 2007 — After starting off the season with three hard losses on the road, some at Aycock had hoped that the varsity football team would turn their luck around with their home opener against Fike this week. But a combination of simple mistakes and an offense that still isn’t quite clicking led the Falcons to a 21-0 loss against the Golden Demons.

Fike took the chance to capitalize on those simple mistakes early on Monday night. A fumbled kickoff was snagged by the Demons and returned for an 84-yard touchdown, followed by a successful kick.

The next time the Demons got their hands on the ball, they began a scoring drive to bring their lead to 14 points. A controversial call on a dropped ball in the end zone led to the second touchdown for Fike, followed by another successful kick.

Fike added on a third touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the quarter, giving them 21 points on Aycock.

At the start of the second quarter, the Falcon defense kicked into gear, limiting the Demons and keeping them from adding to their score for the remainder of the game.

But the offense, which has sputtered all season, couldn’t turn good plays into good scoring drives. Several good opportunities, including a 54-yard pass on a fake punt during the fourth quarter and a drive stopping just short of the goal line in the fourth, were thwarted by misfired passes resulting in interceptions.

Ian Calder played his second game at quarterback, and Coach Randy Pinkowski feels confident in his abilities in the position.

Earlier in the week, he confirmed that Calder will be starting for the foreseeable future. He said that he began the season with Steven Strouse in the position and was confident in his role. But an injury at Greene Central, coupled with some anxiety after a poor offensive performance at Clayton proved to be the turning point.

“Through these first few weeks running the spread offense it has become obvious that we must put our best athlete at QB,” said Coach Pink.

He then began working Calder into the position, and says that he has confidence in him.

Calder gained 92 yards on passes Monday night, completing four out of 20 attempts. He also earned 12 of Aycock’s 33 yards of ground offense. Devin Sanders contributed much of the rest with 21 yards.

But the Falcon defense, which has been the steady point all season, played another strong game this week.

After the mistakes of the first quarter, Aycock’s defensive squad stepped up their game, holding Fike back from scoring and allowing only 125 yards of offense for the final three quarters.

Kendre Reid, Kyle Petticoffer, and Anthony Holder each recorded a sack. Tyheim Pitt led in tackles with 12 hits, and Reid held his own with 11. Calder had nine stops, and Holder recorded nine tackles.

After a shortened practice week due to Monday night’s game, the Falcons will have another chance to try and put it all together for a win. They will take on North Lenoir at home Friday night.
