WCPS helps deliver 'Meals on Wheels'

13 September 2007 — On Friday, September 8, Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) kicked off its annual United Way Campaign by helping delivering “Meals on Wheels” to dozens of Wayne County Seniors. Around 45 Principals, Administrators, and Central Office Staff participated.

“When you see the gratitude in the faces of people you help, it makes it personal,” stated Dr. Steven Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. “Every year we have our principals deliver ‘Meals on Wheels’ so they can better understand what it means to help those in need. They can take their experiences back to their own school, to help encourage students and staff to become more involved in United Way.”

For principals, the kickoff event was an opportunity to see where their United Way contributions go. “Delivering ‘Meals on Wheels’ was such a wonderful opportunity,” stated Carol Artis, North Drive Elementary principal. “After seeing the gratitude on the faces of those who are being helped, it really reminds us what giving is about.”

Last year, the school system helped raise over $117,000 for the United Way, exceeding its campaign goal by more than $21,000 dollars. This year, it is the school system’s goal to help raise $119,000 for the United Way, to help improve the lives of more than 2,380 people across Wayne County.

To help get a jumpstart on the school system’s United Way campaign, around twenty schools began their campaigns early. By Friday’s kickoff, the school system had already met 12 percent of its campaign goal by raising over $15,000.

This year, it is the Wayne County United Way’s goal to help improve the lives of more than 29,200 people across Wayne County. Dr. Taylor says he is appreciative of the annual donations made by teachers, principals, administrators, and support staff, to help make the United Way’s goal achievable.

“Wayne County Public Schools is a proud supporter of the United Way,” added Dr. Taylor. “The United Way is such a valuable resource here in Wayne County. It helps improve the lives of so many of our students and parents, as well as the thousands of people who cannot help themselves in the communities where we live.”
