Cougars run when Falcons falter, 59-7

13 September 2007 — As the Aycock Falcons prepare to host their first home football game of the season this week, the boys will attempt to recover from a 59-7 loss to Goldsboro last week, which put the team at 0-3 for the season.

While the Falcons gained a decent amount of ground Friday night, the boys struggled to convert their progress to points. The Falcons had three fumbles for the game, and the Cougars seized all three.

The Cougars charged into the lead within the first minute on the clock, scoring the first touchdown with a 74-yard run. After a second Goldsboro touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, the Falcons recorded their first and only scoring play of the night.

Devin Sanders scored the touchdown with an 81-yard kick-off return, followed by a successful PAT from kicker Alex Roosin. The impressive play seemed to be a sign that things could turn around for the Falcons.

But the Cougars answered that sign with a third touchdown before the end of the quarter. The second quarter held two more touchdowns for the Cougars, including a 94-yard pass to bring the score to 34-7 at halftime.

Three more touchdowns from the Cougars buried Aycock in the third quarter, and Goldsboro rounded out their massive victory with a final scoring play in the last minute of the game.

Aycock Head Coach Randy Pinkowski said the boys just couldn’t take their efforts into a scoring mode on Friday night.

Coach Pink also highlighted the performance of Ian Calder at quarterback. Calder played most of the game at quarterback while regular starter Steven Strouse was sidelined with an injury.

Strouse did start in Friday’s game, but was send to the sidelines after the Cougar’s second touchdown. Calder played out the rest of the game, gaining 15 yards in the air for the Falcons with 2 completed passes.

On the ground, the Falcons racked up 155 yards of offense on 32 rushing plays. Calder gained 92 yards on 14 attempts. Tyheim Pitt followed with 42 yards on 9 attempts. Blake Cooper had a gain of 12 yards, while Devin Sanders had a gain of 10.

Defensively, Bryant Hill led the Falcons with six tackles and one assist. Michael King had five tackles and one assist, while Tyheim Pitt had four tackles and one assist.

The Falcons will host their first game of the season this week against Wilson Fike. Fike is currently 2-1 for the season.
