Sheriff Winders's Labor Day tips

30 August 2007 — With the approach of the Labor Day weekend, Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders asks all citizens to join him in making this Labor Day holiday period a safe, happy, and enjoyable one for all.

Traditionally during this holiday, our highways experience one of the highest traffic flows of the year. The Sheriff would like to remind all Wayne County residents to follow these safety tips:

• Always scan the road ahead and behind you when driving. Be aware of possible pedestrians, animals, disabled vehicles, and any other road hazards.

• Never allow passengers or your surroundings to distract you.

• Always pass safely in a proper passing zone. Never cut or swerve abruptly out of your lane of travel into the opposite lane when passing.

• Be sure to always use your turn signals. Turn signals should always be given in time to allow other drivers to know your intent of turning.

• Do not follow other vehicle too closely. They may need to make a sudden stop.

• Limit the use of your cell phone. A cell phone should not distract your concentration of driving. There is nothing wrong with pulling into a parking lot or any other safe place to use your cell phone.

• Remember the MOVE OVER LAW that is now in effect. You should move over to the opposite lane, if at all possible, when you observe an emergency vehicle on the shoulder of the road. If you cannot move to the opposite lane due to other vehicles, then you should slow down until you have passed the emergency vehicle.

• Please do not drink and drive. Have a designated driver. Alcohol has the tendency to give you the false impression that you aren't drunk, or that you "feel fine." Please allow a sober and responsible person to drive for you.

"Lastly, I would remind all motorists to practice the Golden Rule when driving. Be courteous and tolerant of other drivers," Sheriff Winders said in closing "Let's make this Labor Day weekend a safe one on the roads in Wayne County."
