Women's team starts season strong30 August 2007 — The Charles B. Aycock Lady Falcons finished up the first week of play in girl’s tennis with a 2-1 record after a close match with Greene Central on Thursday ended in a loss.
The girls started off their season with a win over Clayton at home on Monday, 8-1. Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Jessica Davis, Mallory Strickland, and Kristen Fischer won singles matches, while all three of Aycock’s doubles teams won their matches. The Lady Falcons had another undefeated night at North Lenoir on Tuesday, sweeping the singles matches. Kristen Prosser and Quinn both had 8-0 against their opponents. There were no doubles matches because of the extreme heat Tuesday afternoon.
On Thursday, the Aycock ladies posted their first loss of the season against Greene Central, with a final score of 5-4. First and second seeded Prosser and Barnes both won their singles matches. Barnes’ win came after wins in two tiebreaking sets. The Falcons got two of three wins in doubles, with the teams of Barnes and Quinn and Prosser and Bennett winning their matches. Coach Luke Vail said the match on Thursday was between two very evenly matched teams. “I thought the quality of tennis was exceptional for this early in the season,” he said. He said he was proud of the performances by Prosser and Barnes. “I was especially proud of the way Kristen Prosser stepped up to the challenge and played an outstanding match at number one singles against a very talented opponent,” he said. “Courtney Barnes displayed a great deal of determination and mental toughness winning two tie-breaks to prevail at number two singles.” He said the match gives the team something to build on for their next week of play. The JV tennis team started their season with a split record, earning a win against North Lenoir and a loss against Greene Central. The JV Lady Falcons swept the matches against North Lenoir, with Hollie Baker, Alicia Sodoma, Nicole Kessler, Abbey Strickland, Amanda Farmer, and Harlie Howard all winning singles matches. Doubles teams Kessler and Strickland, Farmer and Alicia Torres, and Bailey Dickens and Haley Taylor all won doubles matches. Like the varsity team, the JV girls finished with a 5-4 loss against Greene Central. Baker, Kessler, and Howard all recorded singles wins, and the duo of Strickland and Kessler won doubles. Both teams played Greenfield Academy on Tuesday afternoon. Varsity played at Greenfield, while the JV played at home.
