Falcons nearly take down Comets, 3-0

By Sarah A. Wise

NL Staff Writer

30 August 2007 — Despite starting their regular season off with a loss to Clayton, Head Coach Randy Pinkowski said that he is not disappointed with his team’s performance overall.

The Falcons played a hard-fought game against the Comets on Friday night, finishing the game with a three-point loss. Though the Aycock boys couldn’t get anything going offensively, their defense made sure Clayton couldn’t either. The Comets walked away with the win through a second-quarter field goal.

Coach Pink was very pleased his team’s defensive play at Clayton.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with how the defense played,” he said, “especially against such a strong opponent.”

He said that the defense’s strong play indicates good things for the team throughout the rest of the season.

“If you can play a good defensive game, you’re playing a pretty good game,” he said.

Anthony Holder was the team’s lead defensive player in Friday night’s game, with 11 tackles and two sacks. Kyle Petticoffer had eight tackles and Tyheim Pitt had six, while Jarrett Covar had five. Ian Caulder, Kendre Reid, and Michael King each had three tackles.

Punter Bryant Hill had 11 punts in Friday’s game with an average of 27 yards.

While Coach Pink bragged about his team’s defensive play on Friday night, he noted that the team’s offense was nothing to shake a finger at either.

“Yeah, we’ll need to play better offense down the road in conference games,” he said, “but overall they played a good game, too.”

Coach Pink said his offense is in a somewhat different configuration this season, and it’s taking the boys some time to get used to it.

“It’s a new style of playing, and it’s taking some time for the offense to gel,” he said. “But once it sets, and the boys are playing together, the offense is going to be really good.”

Quarterback Steven Strouse completed six out of 16 passes, for a total of 32 yards in the air. On the ground, the Falcons netted only 64 yards. Kelton Lewis and Devin Sanders each earned 26 yards on three attempts, and Blake Cooper earned 12 on seven.

The Falcons are away again this week, taking on Greene Central at 7:30, and will play their first home game in two weeks against Fike.
