Suspects arrested in Stantonsburg shooting death

By Sarah A. Wise

NL Staff Writer

17 August 2007 — Reginald Lamonte Atkinson, 36, of Farmville has been identified as the gunman in the home invasion and murder of Song Ni in Stantonsburg.

With help from the Wilson Police Department and Pitt County Sheriff’s Department, a total of five men were arrested in connection with the robbery and shooting.

Reginald Atkinson, as well as his nephew Stacey Devon Atkinson, 18, of Walsonburg and Darryl Wilkes, 36, of Farmville were charged with murder, seven counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of armed robbery, and first degree burglary for their involvement. Sheriff’s investigators have since pinpointed, from investigations and witness statements, that Reginald Atkinson fired the shot that killed Ni.

At the time of the robbery, both Stacey Atkinson and Wilkes were wearing electronic monitoring devices as part of a pre-trial release program in Pitt County. Atkinson’s device was deactivated from 8:00 p.m. until midnight the night of the robbery because he had received permission from the department to attend a family reunion.

Steven Maurice Joyner, 37, and Ellis Hunter, 23, both of Farmville, were also arrested in connection with the crime. They were charged with accessory after the fact of murder, and are accused of providing an alibi and potentially destroying evidence for the suspects. They are being held in the Wilson County Detention Center under a $75,000 bond.

Wilson County investigators are still serving search warrants and conducting investigations, so more suspects may be arrested in connection with this crime.
