Block Grant questions answered

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

16 August 2007 — After questions arose concerning the intentions of the Community Development Block Grant at last month’s meeting, the Stantonsburg Town Board was left wondering what would happen to houses slated for renovation.

Commissioner Hubert Tyson brought the issue up to the board, after hearing from several occupants of homes in the project that they had been approached about having their home demolished and being relocated, rather than following the original plans of renovation.

However, Mr. Tyson reported this month that, after several meetings with RSM Harris Associates representatives who are overseeing the project, his questions have been answered and he is satisfied with the progress of the project.

Mr. Tyson said that, after last month’s meeting, he felt compelled to take action and scheduled a meeting between the town board and RSM Harris representatives.

After several meetings, one house was pinpointed as the root of the question. A home at 303 N. Whitley Street did not meet rehabilitation requirements, said RSM Harris Associates. Though the cost of rehabilitation is less than the limit of $40,000 per home, it exceeds a limit of $38 per square foot, and it exceeds the value of the property.

The owners and occupant of the home agreed to pay the $4,152 difference that would bring the cost of rehabilitation back into requirements.
