Wayne Schools' tips for fall - Wayne-Wilson News Leader, Fremont, NC

16 August 2007 — With the school year quickly approaching, here are some quick tips for parents to help make the ringing of the first bell on Monday, August 27, a welcome sound for students!

· School supply lists are available at your child’s school website, available at the school, or may be posted at local retail stores. A general supply list is also available at www.waynecountyschools.org.

· Start working with your child to get back on regular sleeping schedules for school.

· Review dress code policies and school policies with their children (available at www.waynecountyschools.org.) Some schools may have a more restrictive dress code policy.

· Attend Open House events at your child’s school to meet teachers, pick up supply lists, and see daily schedules for classes.

· Parents with children walking to school should familiarize students with walking routes and also discuss safety tips to help ensure students don’t talk with strangers, don’t get into vehicles with adults not okayed by parents, and don’t take short cuts through unsafe areas.

· Parents driving children to school should familiarize themselves with the routes to school, as well as plan for extra time in the morning and afternoon for extra traffic or school bus slow downs.

· Parents with children riding the school bus should make sure their child knows what bus they’re supposed to ride in the morning and afternoon, as well as discuss rules for conduct on the bus.

· Parents who are new to Wayne County Public Schools should either go to the WCPS website at www.waynecountyschools.org or contact their child’s school to discuss graduation or transfer requirements.

· Parents with incoming Kindergarteners should either go to the WCPS website at www.waynecountyschools.org or contact their local school to discuss incoming kindergarten requirements.

· Parents should update emergency contact numbers at their child’s school as well as update phone numbers in their Honeywell Alert Service accounts, easily accessible at the www.waynecountyschools.org website.

“Our 33 schools are working hard to ensure the first day of school sets the tone for the rest of the school year,” states Dr. Steven Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. “If parents have not already started, it is vital that they now begin working to prepare their children for the start of school, and help them become mentally ready to learn.”
