STEPHEN E. KEARNEY

Stephen Eugene Kearney, 62, of Goldsboro, died on Sunday morning, August 5, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Stephen was born in Greene County on November 12, 1944 to the late Joseph Stephen Kearney and Edna Isabelle Sumrell Kearney. He had worked as plumbing contractor for the County of Wayne until his retirement. Stephen was a member of the Patetown Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 7 at 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Williams and the Rev. Dock Hobbs officiating. Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Betty Holland Kearney; his sons, Stephen “Steve” Eugene Kearney Jr. and wife, Lori, of Apex, Bryan Allen Kearney and wife, Amy, of Goldsboro and Kenan Wayne Kearney and wife, Charlie, of Four Oaks; his daughter, Karen Pate Peele and husband, Jeff, of Pikeville; his sister, Dorothy Eleanor Parrish of Snow Hill; his brothers, James Edgar Kearney and wife, Nora, of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Bryan Jr., Holly, Madison, Cade, Delaney, Matthew and Macie; and a brother-in-law, J.D. Holland of the home. He is also survived by his special pet, Smokey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Roger Kearney.

NAOMI H. POLTER

Naomi Huffman Polter, 89, of Goldsboro, died Saturday, August 4 at her home.

Naomi was born in Wayne County on January 12, 1918 to the late Lloyd C. Huffman and Esther McCullen Huffman. She was married to the late William M. Polter and was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Rosa Mae and Betty Lou. Naomi was a member of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 54.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 8 at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Doug Johnson and the Rev. Glenn Everett officiating. Burial followed in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Naomi is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Street and her husband, Wayne, of Pikeville and Janice Coons and her husband, Jerry; her grandchildren, Jeffrey H. Eaton and wife, Summer, of Wichita, Kansas, and Angela R. Williams of Raleigh; her great-grandchildren, Willow Sage Eaton and Meadow Blue Eaton of Wichita, Kansas; and her sisters, Helen H. Sauls of Fremont, Esther H. Howell of Pikeville and Dolly H. Best of Mebane.

EVA L. SMITH

Eva Lee Smith, 75, of Pikeville, died Thursday, August 2 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elm Grove Church of Christ in Pikeville. Pastor Kenneth Vaughn officiated. Burial was in Old Mill Cemetery.

LYNDA B. SUGG

Lynda “Lynne” Barnes Sugg, 42, of Pikeville, died suddenly at her home on Saturday, August 4.

Lynne was born in Wayne County on May 10, 1965 to Linda Vail Barnes and William Pete Barnes of Pikeville. She had worked as a nurse.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 7 at 10 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Pikeville Cemetery.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her children, Kristin Newman Shirley, Mary Brittney Hall and Jacob Marcus Sugg; her grandson, Trevor Shirley; and her brothers and sisters, Page Barnes and wife, Gail, of Goldsboro, Chris Barnes of Fremont, Mark Barnes of Durham, Tim Barnes and wife, Lori, of Goldsboro, Melinda Mercer and husband, Neil, of Pikeville, Tina Mitchell and husband, Kevin, of Pikeville, April Etheridge and husband, Charles DisDier, of Pikeville, Lance Barnes of Pikeville, Amber Barnes of New Bern, Aimee Barnes of Pikeville and Ashlyn Barnes of Pikeville.

She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Helene Rawson and Annie Turner; and her great-grandmother, Sally Vail.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

JESSE M. CORBETT

Jesse Marvin Corbett, 73, of Fremont, died Tuesday, August 7 at home.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 10 at 11 a.m. at Eureka Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Strouse officiating.

Born on December 26, 1933, he was a member of Faro P.F.W.B. Church.

He is survived by his mother, Nancy Jernigan Sauls of Goldsboro; his wife, Betty Corbett; two daughters, Kelly Hill and her husband, Preston, of Fremont and Nancy Lynn Graham and her husband, Mark, of California; one son, Nelson Stafford of Pennsylvania; one brother, J.T. Sauls and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Fremont; and five grandchildren, Zachari, Hunter, Amber, Justin and Christopher.

Mr. Corbett was preceded in death by his father, LeRoy Sauls.

The family will receive friends tonight (Thursday) from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home, 102 N. Pine St. in Fremont and other times at 724 Reid Town, Fremont.

ALASKA R. STANLEY

Alaska Ray Stanley, 58, of Pikeville, died Wednesday, August 8 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Arrangements are incomplete at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
