Eureka Board turns attention to ditch repair, cemetery improvementsBy Barry Merrill NL Publisher 9 August 2007 — Fixing Sandra Bass’s ditch was again a major topic for the Eureka Town Board during their monthly meeting Tuesday night. In response to her complaint, board members had been asked to look at the ditch before the meeting. Commissioner Wayne Taylor said he had looked at the ditch and said there was a crack in the concrete, but Mrs. Bass later said that there apparently was a crack in the tile that was washing away dirt beneath the surface and would cause a collapse in the area. Mr. Taylor and Commissioner Bobby Gooding said there was some dispute between the town and the state, as the ditch is on a state-maintained street, but the state has stated the ditch should be maintained by the town. Later in the meeting, Mayor Steve Howell said he would talk with state officials about the project that week. Maintenance Worker Herbert Green asked if the grass at the lagoon should be cut. The board approved a cutting at the lagoon, and said he should cut the grass there twice a year. Commissioner Bobby Gooding reported that the fire department would be rated, affecting fire insurance rates, in November. He noted that two fire hydrants, at the corners of Church and Main, and Church and Sullivan need to be repaired before the hydrants are tested for available pressure and volume. He also said the fire department would have a contract for the town within the next two weeks. Commissioner Myrtie Sauls said they were continuing to look at putting in steps at the cemetery, putting a tile in, covering it with soil, and putting vinyl handrails. They are awaiting cost estimates before approving the work. She also asked that board members look at the driveway in the old section of the cemetery. The board is considering closing that section of driveway and selling lots where the driveway used to be. Town Clerk Reta Chase said she had recently had an inquiry about one of those lots. There was some discussion on some of the sidewalks that had been replaced. There was one sidewalk which was eight inches short, and some discussion about what should be done to remedy, but no conclusion was stated during the meeting. Mayor Howell stated, “We are very pleased with the work (contractor) T.A. Loving has done to this point.”
