Pink pleased with turnout, enthusiasm

By Sarah A. Wise

NL Staff Writer

2 August 2007 — As football teams around the area started their season off Monday night, some in the northern end of Wayne county were wondering why Charles B. Aycock wasn’t doing the same. But Head Coach Randy Pinkowski said starting off a day later was a good decision for his team.

Coach Pink held what he says was like an “invitation-only” practice on Monday night for those who had been attending summer workouts, and kicked off the full-team practice on Tuesday night. He said that starting off that way rewarded the kids who’ve been working all summer. It also gave a little relief to the coaching staff, who expected an excess of 100 kids to show up to that first practice.

“It killed two birds with one stone,” he said. “We had a good session, a lot of good work but there wasn’t that pressure on the first night.”

He expected around 155 kids to come out for the first practices. Coach Pink expects 42 or 43 boys on his varsity squad. The junior varsity will have between 36 and 38, and the ninth grade team will swell to 40 or more.

“When you’ve got that many, you need a two-day process,” he said.

As practices begin, Coach Pink has a good feeling about this year’s team.

“Even if we’re not as fast getting started, we’re still a pretty good team from top to bottom,” he said.

Practices will be held at 5:30 each night, and will usually go until 7:30. The Falcons have their first (and only) scrimmage on August 10 at home against Spring Creek, which Coach Pink says will work to their advantage, giving the team ample time before the start of their regular season.

Their first game will be on the road at Clayton on August 25.
