LULU H. CHASTAIN

Lulu Hammaker Chastain, 73, of Goldsboro, died Monday, July 23 at her residence.

Mrs. Chastain was born in Duncansville, Pa. on August 3, 1933, to the late Herb Hammaker and Lovetta Hammaker. Mrs. Chastain worked at the Book Center and at local daycares.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28 at 2 p.m. at the Seymour Johnson A.F.B. Chapel, with Captain Randall Jamieson officiating.

Mrs. Chastain is survived by her daughter, Frankie McPherson of Abilene, Texas; her sons, Dean Chastain and wife, Linda, of Pikeville, Jim Chastain and wife, JoAnn, of Bellevue, Neb., Rick Chastain and wife, Debra, of Charlotte, and Stuart Chastain and wife, Kristal, of New Port Richey, Fla.; her sisters, Betty Fleck of Duncansville, Pa.; Judy Gates of Bellingham, Wash., Linda Hammaker of Arvada, Colo., and Dorothy Barthlow of El Paso, Texas; her brothers, Tom Hammaker of Altoona, Pa., Joe Hammaker of Centre Hall, Pa., and Bob Hammaker of Altoona, Pa.; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Twyliah Jane Hammaker, and her sisters, Twyliah Ruth Kuhn and Eileen Joyce Hoover.

Following the service the family will receive friends at the home of Dean and Linda Chastain.

Bertha Conner, 83, died Monday, July 23 at Wilson Medical Center, Wilson.

JARVIS L. FLOWERS

Jarvis Lester Flowers, 45, of Pikeville, died Sunday, July 22 at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Funeral services were held Tuesday evening, July 24, in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro. The Rev. Gene Thompson officiated. Graveside services were held Wednesday morning, July 25, at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

Mr. Flowers was born in Wayne County on March 16, 1962, to Dollie Strickland Flowers and the late Carlos Jack Flowers. Mr. Flowers was co-owner of Eastern Air Conditioning Services.

In addition to his mother, Dollie Flowers of Pikeville, he is survived by his wife, Teresa Flowers; one son, Mark Flowers of the home; one daughter, Stephanie Flowers Moore and her husband, Terry Wayne Moore Jr., of Pikeville; one sister, Rhonda Fields and her husband, Billy, of Pikeville; one granddaughter, Jaida Moore; and several nieces and nephews.

DOROTHY J. MASSEY

Dorothy Jackson Massey, 80, of Eureka died Monday, July 23 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Massey was born May 21, 1927 in Sampson County to the late Dorothy Crumpler Jackson and Carlisle David Jackson. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Jackson, David Jackson, Carlisle Jackson Jr., and Franklin Jackson; sister, Geraldine Jackson McCullen; and a grandson, William Hooks Lane III.

Mrs. Massey was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church of Pikeville. She was loyal and dedicated to her church, having served for 34 years as the wife of a United Methodist Church minister, the Rev. Gerald Rudolph Massey.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, July 25, from Eureka United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Eureka Cemetery. The Rev. Edward Drew and the Rev. David Hollowell officiated.

Surviving are her husband for 61 years, the Rev. Gerald Rudolph Massey; a daughter, Delores Massey Cobb and husband, Charles S. Cobb, of Cary; two sons, Louis Carlisle Massey and wife, Lu Chase Massey, of Eureka and Gerald Rudolph Massey Jr. and wife, Sharon Sleigh Massey, of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Emily Lou Hudson of Wilmington and Jamie Carter of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Trey Massey and wife, Stacy, Chris Massey and wife, Sandy, Allison Massey Ambler and husband, George, Ryan S. Lane and wife, Becky Jo, Jonathan M. Lane and wife, Jennifer, Thomas Chase Massey and Carlisle Jackson Massey; nine great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Massey, Meredith Massey, Will Massey, Alex Massey, Marshall Massey, Victoria Lane, Bridgette Lane and Michael Lane.

MARY B. SIMMONS

Mary Alice Bagley Simmons, 73, of Pikeville, died Sunday, July 15 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 29 at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church with Apostle D. L. McIntyre officiating. Burial will be in Old Mill Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore Simmons of Goldsboro; daughters, Sandra Handsome, Lila Handsome Jones, and Jennifer Bagley; a son, Ali Hasan; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be 2-7 p.m. Saturday with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at McIntyre Funeral Home Ministries.

BETTIE H. GODWIN

Bettie Lee Holland Godwin, 90, of Princeton, died Tuesday morning, July 24, in Britthaven of Goldsboro.

Born in Johnston County on April 17, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Bennett and Martha Bass Holland and was the widow of Leamon Harris Godwin. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest “Bo” Godwin and Earl Godwin and a daughter, Peggy Faye Godwin. She was a member of The Church of God on Edwards Street in Princeton.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 25 at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Kelvin Adkins and the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. The burial will be at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the cemetery at Fellowship United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her sons, Bill Godwin and Richard Godwin, both of Princeton; daughters, Betty Lou Sullivan of Princeton, Bonnie Sue Lancaster of Greenville, Joe Anne Best of Dudley and Rose Grimes of Pikeville; 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

FRANCES E. SMITH

Frances Elizabeth Smith, 67, of Goldsboro, died Tuesday, July 24 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Miss Smith was born in Wayne County on December 30, 1939 to the late Rupert Smith and Mildred Smith.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Grady officiating.

Miss Smith is survived by her brother, Derald Smith and wife, June, of Goldsboro; her nephews, Robert Smith of Goldsboro, Brian Smith of Philadelphia, Penn., and Chris Waller of Wilmington; her aunt, Bertha Stroud of Pikeville and her uncle, James “Buddy” Smith of LaGrange.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 309 W. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.

The family will receive friends at the home of Derald and June Smith, 4372 U.S. Hwy. 13 North, Goldsboro, N.C.
