Meet the Fremont mayoral candidates

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

26 July 2007 — While there isn’t a lot of competition in the race for commissioner seats in Fremont, with only one incumbent facing opposition, the race for mayor is a different story. Two newcomers have filed to run against current Mayor Devone Jones, who is seeking a second term. While Mayor Jones is seeking a second term to provide continuity to several town projects, his opponents are seeking to bring a change to the town.

Amy Price, 48, of E. Main Street was the first to file in the mayor’s race. Mrs. Price is married to Connie Price, and has lived in Fremont since 1991. Her husband is originally from Fremont. The two have two daughters, ages 18 and 6.

Mrs. Price is a family physician, and has worked for practices in Stantonsburg and Pikeville. She attended East Carolina University and the school of medicine at Wake Forest. She and her family attend Fremont United Methodist Church, and in addition to church activities, Mrs. Price also heads the Fremont Crime Watch.

She said she decided to run for mayor because she feels that the town of Fremont needs a change.

“I think the town of Fremont needs to see a change for the better,” she said. “I would like to see some different leadership. I want to be a person that can represent all of the people of Fremont.”

Darron Flowers, 72, of Cross Street also filed to run for mayor. Mr. Flowers is married to Mary Lee, and has two children and three grandchildren. He is a native of Fremont, and graduated from Fremont School in 1952. He left to attend East Carolina College, and returned to the area upon graduation. He has worked as a teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools in Wayne County, and retired from education in 1994.

Mr. Flowers is actively involved in the Fremont Rotary Club, and has served as a leader on local and district levels. He is also a member of the Masonic Lodge, and has served on the Fremont Planning Board. Mr. Flowers and his wife are members of Fremont United Methodist Church.

His interest in running for mayor lies in a desire to serve the citizens of the town.

“I think with my background and interest in the town, I can serve the people of Fremont well,” he said.

Mayor Devone Jones, 66, is seeking election for a second term. Mr. Jones also served as an alderman on the board for eight years in the late seventies and early eighties. He has lived in the Fremont area for most of his life, and graduated from Norwayne School. He and his wife, the former Geraldine Smith, have three children and two grandchildren.

Mr. Jones owns and operates a floor covering business in Goldsboro. He attends Union Grove Church in Pikeville, where he servers as a trustee. He is also a lifetime member of the Norwayne Alumni Association, and a member of the Silver Leaf Lodge in Fremont.

His experiences on the board for the past term, he said, are what has shaped his decision to run for a second term. After working with the town to acquire funding to repair the sewer system, he said that he wants to be able to see that project through and work with the town to reduce sewer rates for customers.

“People are working with the board, working at getting all of this stuff done, and I want to make sure we continue to accumulate money to do more,” he said.
