Vinson heads for greens of Barton

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

19 July 2007 — Will Vinson said since he started thinking about college, he’s always wanted to play college golf. His wish came true a few weeks ago when the recent Charles B. Aycock graduate signed to play for Barton College.

He’s kept an eye on the programs at both Barton College and Pitt Community through former teammates Jonathan Burke and Ryan Campbell, who went on to play for the teams post-graduation. But after looking at the schools as a whole, Vinson said he felt that Barton was a better fit for him, so he applied and was accepted.

Vinson said that finding out he’d get to play at Barton was just icing on the cake.

“All I heard were good things about Barton,” he said. “It’s a good school, and it’s close to home. When I found out I could play golf for them it just made it even better.”

He has been talking with Barton for most of his senior year, and began seriously discussing the possibility of playing since midway through this year’s season.

Though Vinson has hoped to play golf at the college level, he hasn’t always been an avid golf fan.

“Growing up I always played baseball,” he said. “I’d go out on the golf course with my dad and he’d try to get me to play, but it wasn’t until I was 11 that he finally got me to try it.”

And since then, he said, he’s been hooked.

Vinson said he really looks forward to the opportunity to play for Barton. He said he really wants to have an impact on the team.

“I will work as hard as I can, and hope to have a positive impact on the team and help them win,” he said.

He explains that the chance to play on the college level is kind of like a new beginning for him, going from the leader of a high school team to the new kid on a college team.

“I’ve definitely got some improving to do, but just the fact that I’m playing in college is pretty awesome,” he said.

As far as improvements go, Vinson said he knows he needs to continue to improve his mental game, which he has been focusing on all season.

“It’s the most important part of the game anyway,” he said. “Once you’ve got that in place, everything else kind of comes together.”

He says that he’s seen a lot of personal improvement over the past year, and looks forward to the chance to continue to improve his game at Barton.
