Powering up Pikeville

Local board races: final roster

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

20 July 2007 — As the deadline to file for municipal elections drew to a close on Friday afternoon, Wayne and Wilson County saw a fair number of last-minute additions to the race.

In Fremont, Darron Flowers threw hit hat into the ring for the position of mayor on Thursday. Amy V. Price will also be challenging incumbent mayor Devone Jones, who is running for his second term.

Al Lewis filed on Friday to challenge Harold Cuddington for the alderman’s seat in District 4. Billy Harvey declared his intention to run for District 1, filing late Thursday. Aldermen Leon Mooring (District 2), W.T. Smith (District 3), Leroy Ruffin (District 5), and Annie Lewis (District 6) are all running unopposed. This is Mrs. Lewis’ first time on the ballot, as she was appointed in 2005 to fill the seat of Sylvester Artis when Mr. Artis passed away.

Six men are running for the three seats open on the Pikeville Town Board. The seats of Al Greene, Bruce Thomas, and Johnnie Weaver are up for election this year; Mr. Greene and Mr. Thomas have filed to run for another term, while Mr. Weaver will not be seeking re-election.

Joining the incumbents are four more candidates. Todd S. Anderson declared his intentions to run early on, and was joined this week by Talmage “Thigie” Thigpen, Vance Greeson, and Dennis K. Lewis.

In Eureka, no one filed to run for the three commissioner seats that are open. The election will be determined by write-in votes.

In Wilson County, two seats and the mayor’s position are up for election in Stantonsburg. Current Mayor Roland Gardner did not file to seek re-election. However, current commissioner Bill Edmundson has filed to run for the mayor’s seat.

Incumbents Billie Bardin and Hubert Tyson have filed for re-election, but face three challengers for the two seats. Tommy Darden, Ken Horne, and Harold Powell Dew, Jr. have all filed as well.

In addition, six have filed to run for the five seats on the Northwestern Wayne Sanitary District. Wayne Aycock, Jr., Walter F. Bridgers, James S. Kirby, Bill Lynch, David W. Pittman, and Kenneth Tucker will all run for the board.

Airplane show this Saturday

The Wayne Miniature Aeronautics Club will present its seventeenth annual model airplane show on Saturday, July 21. The show will be held at Rosewood Field on NC Highway 581, north of Cherry Hospital, in Goldsboro. The event is free to the public. Food, soft drinks, and raffle prizes will be available.

Magic for Muggles at Wayne Library

The Wayne County Public Library will hold a one-time opportunity this summer for kids age 8 to 19. “Magic for Muggles,” a magic workshop where kids will learn to perform magic like Harry Potter and his friends at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, will be held July 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. The “Muggles” will learn to suspend the laws of gravity, pass solid through solid, tell their parents’ fortunes, and teach their fathers about income tax through adroit use of leprechaun gold. Muggles will take home a great bag of tricks to show their families and friends. The workshop will be led by Jim Alberti, magician, storyteller, comedian, and entertainer. The workshop is free but registration is required, by signing up at the reference desk or calling 735-1824 ext. 5100.

Cocaine Anonymous meetings

Cocaine Anonymous meets every Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. at Carolina Treatment Center, 1700 East Ash Street, Suite 200, Goldsboro. The group is 12-step focused, open, and non-smoking. For more information, call Kim at 919-583-9326 or Amy at 800-810-8423, ext. 145.
