Harmon brings game to Brunswick Community College

By Sarah A. Wise
NL Staff Writer

19 July 2007 — The chance to play baseball at the college level is a rare opportunity. The chance to play for the inaugural team of a college program is even more exceptional. But that’s exactly what Charles B. Aycock graduate Kyle Harmon will be doing come August.

Harmon has agreed to play for Brunswick Community College as the team gets its baseball program going. He is excited about the chance to make history while getting to play college ball.

“It’s definitely cool to be on the first team,” he said. “You just want to go in and set that bar high for other people.”

After working with head coach Robbie Allen, Harmon said he thinks the prospects for both his place on the team, as well as the team itself, are looking good.

“He said that the players we have coming, for a first year program, we’ll have a real good team,” Harmon said. “I think we’ll all get a lot of playing time.”

Without an established team, all of the players will be working hard to establish their roles. Though Harmon pitches, he said it’s unclear if he’ll primarily be a pitcher for Brunswick.

“During workouts, he wants to see where everybody can play; he wants to be able to work in players,” he said.

Harmon said he knows several of the other players that are being brought in to form the team, including Denver Nixon from the 1A State Championship team in Princeton, and David Smeltzer from Rosewood.

As the team becomes established, Harmon said they will hold practices and games at nearby West Brunswick High, since the college is in the process of building a field.

But Harmon looks forward to Brunswick. He had been looking at several other colleges, but felt Brunswick was the best fit – and it doesn’t hurt that the beach is nearby, he added.
