More Wayne students heading to college

19 July 2007 — Wayne County Public Schools is proud to announce that nearly 87 percent of its 2007 graduates are pursuing their higher education goals through two-year or four-year education programs—an increase of 3% from last year. Of the 1144 graduates at the seven high schools, 995 will be going on to an institute of higher learning. The results come from an exit survey of graduating seniors in June.

“It is exciting to see so many of our graduates planning to further their education,” states Dr. Steven Taylor, Wayne County Public Schools Superintendent. “As educators, it is our goal to ensure students are well equipped to handle the pressures and demands of life after graduation. It is rewarding when graduates elect to pursue rigorous challenges and expand their learning opportunities by attending schools of higher learning.”

The surveys indicate that 351 graduates plan to attend four-year public colleges or universities in North Carolina, and 22 graduates will attend four-year public institutions out-of-state. Eighty-seven graduates will attend a four-year in-state private college, while three graduates will enroll at a four-year out-of-state private institution.

Four hundred ninety-two graduates inform us they plan to attend a two-year community college in North Carolina, and six graduates plan to attend a two-year community college out of state. Thirty-four graduates also plan to attend junior colleges, trade schools, business schools, and nursing schools both in and out-of-state.

While some recent graduates elect to pursue further education, others plan to enter the military or the workforce. Forty-five graduates plan to enter the military, while 52 will go directly to work. Fifty-two students were undecided at the time of the survey.
