Norwayne in top ten at TSA12 July 2007 — Members of the Norwayne TSA competed at the 29th National Technology Students Association Conference in Nashville, TN June 24-28. Over 4,200 students from across the United States, Germany, and Peru participated. Ten students qualified for National Competition by winning first place in state competition. All ten were recognized on stage and received top-ten finalist pins in their events. These students were part of seven teams that placed in the top ten with one team being double first-place national winners. One first place project was in Manufacturing Technology and was entered by Sara Maxwell, Cameron Howell, and Harlie Howard. Students designed and built a cat window seat. Pictures on the display board showed the steps to manufacture the product. Rules required that two of the window seats be displayed and that tolerances be no more than 1/16 of an inch for each piece produced. A notebook included such things as multi-view drawings, tools used, a flow chart, and an interest survey. Students polled faculty and students to see who would buy one for $19.95. To keep cost down, Crawford Furniture in Pikeville donated wood from packing crates. Students learned the safe operation of tools and machinery as well as computer skills and digital photography. The same group of girls won first place in Medical Technology The team of Marah Radford and Evan Trent won a top-ten finalist pin in Inventions and Innovations with their display and working model of a Purse Alert hidden inside a purse. Lauren Larison, Tyler Pate and Rebecca Pate won a top ten pin in Construction Challenge with their display of the four new swings that were made this year and placed in the courtyard in front of the Norwayne gym. Kathleen Doughty and Heath Radford won a top ten pin in Agriculture and Biotechnology with their display on Inego, a natural corn product that can be used to make clothes. More use of this product can cut our dependance on crude oil. Marah Radford and Rebecca Pate won a top ten pin in Environmental Challenge with their display on new equipment that can sort waste for small towns and increase recycling. Rebecca Pate won her third top ten finalist pin in Communication Challenge. She designed a TSA newsletter to qualify for the event.
