Stantonsburg under water restrictionBy Sarah A. Wise 12 July 2007 — The Town of Stantonsburg isn’t experiencing problems with their water system due to the summer drought – at least, not yet. But the town board agreed to operate on the side of caution at their monthly meeting on Monday night, issuing a declaration for voluntary water restriction for citizens of the town. Voluntary water restriction, explained Town Manager Gary Davis, means that citizens will be encouraged to reduce their water use on a voluntary basis. He hopes that instituting voluntary restrictions now will prevent the town from having to go to mandatory restrictions should the drought continue throughout the summer. Mr. Davis said that the town of Stantonsburg has actually experienced minimal problems with the water system. “We’ve had relatively few problems thus far,” he said, “but this weekend the system was strained.” He added that several surrounding areas with similar well systems have been experiencing low water levels. In the past, he said, Stantonsburg has operated on the side of caution, issuing voluntary restrictions when other surrounding towns did. “With the severity of drought we are experiencing, I’d like to request that the council consider invoking voluntary water restriction.” The council members consented to the voluntary restrictions, and Mayor Roland Gardner made a declaration that the town would invoke voluntary water restriction. Citizens can reduce their water consumption in a variety of ways. Watering the lawn every other day, rather than every day, is a big way to conserve. Another big saver is only washing full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. “Just do anything you can to cut back on the amount of water you’re using,” said Mr. Davis. The board also set a public hearing for the rezoning of a property on Commercial Avenue. Joe Speight has requested that his lot at 306 Commercial Avenue be rezoned from residential housing to commercial. Mr. Davis told the board that the land had previously had a commercial business on it, but the business had closed many years ago, and the land was rezoned with the surrounding area. The board set a public hearing for the rezoning request for August 6 at 7:00, prior to the August meeting. During the public comment portion of the meeting, Peter Wiedman asked the board why they did not notify the public when they meet. He also asked if agendas could be sent to citizens. Mr. Davis replied that a schedule of the town’s meetings for the year is posted on a bulletin board in the town office. In addition, he said, he would make sure that special meetings, such as public hearings, would be posted as well. However, he and Town Clerk Dianne Webb agreed that mailing agendas to citizens would be too costly. A recent mailing to citizens, Mr. Davis said, cost the town several hundred dollars – an amount they just can’t justify spending on a regular basis. But he told Mr. Wiedman that any citizen can call or come up to town hall and ask what is on the agenda for any particular meeting, He also said that if there is a specific issue any citizen would like to discuss, he or she can contact town hall and ask to be put on the agenda.
